The Boy at the Train Station

After watching Spirited Away for the umpteenth time, I couldn't help but wonder about the solitary figure that stood on the train station by himself (or herself) as the train sped by.

I stand everyday at the station, waiting for a train to come by. Sometimes people board, whilst other times people alight. I am never part of either group though, not being one of those blessed with train tickets.

I enjoy watching the people pass by, trying to imagine where they were going, what they were doing. The pick of the day as the train came to the station was a group of four, one a rat, one some sort of bird, one strange black-cloaked spectre, and one very ordinary girl of probably no more than ten. They all sat together (...well, the bird was flying), but they were quite the motley crew.

I could only see the backs of the girl and the wraith, so I couldn't see their expressions. I could see through the wraith to notice a mask on his face - an odd mask with an unusual expression. The rat, however, was bouncing up and down cheerfully, and the bird was fluttering slightly above it.

Where could they be going, I wondered. It would have to be somewhereawfully strange; I could think of no normal place that the four would go to. I finally come upon a conclusion: Swamp Bottom, where nobody but the old witch lived, whom nobody ever got near for fear of being cursed. Swamp Bottom would be a good place for them, I decided, and then tried to think of what they would be doing there.

But then the train sped away, and the four disappeared along the train tracks, leaving me by myself at the train station once again, with no adventures of my own, and no train to take me to any adventures Icould have. I stood, once again, at the station, waiting for a train to come by. x owari
