Chapter 001
"Expecto Patronus!"
Sirius whisked his wand through the air, producing a thin, white wisp of magic. As it twisted and twirled through the air, it began to take shape, forming a large Labrador. Remus recoiled slightly in shock.
"A… A dog!"
He didn't know what he had been expecting. Not this, that was for sure. Sure, Sirius had always loved dogs, and there was no reason for it to not be one, but having his best friend's patronus be a canine hit close to home for him. After all, being a werewolf, he'd grown quite the affinity for dogs and the sort. He wasn't sure how to react.
"I… Sirius, that's marvellous! A dog; who'd've thought?"
Sirius grinned widely. "I had a feeling." He put his wand back in his pocket. "After all, I have always loved canines."
Remus blinked. Was that a playful look on Sirius' face? "And what's this about canines? What an oddly specific word choice…" he thought to himself. "Surely saying dogs would suffice…?"
Sirius sighed deeply. "That took a lot out of me," he admitted, adding, "I think I might turn in for the night."
"Now? It's barely seven…"
Sirius chuckled. "You try producing a patronus for three hours straight! It's rather tiresome after a while."
Remus blushed in embarrassment. He'd been able to produce his patronus, a wolf (yet another canine…) on his third attempt, leaving poor Sirius to wave his wand by himself. Peter and James had detention again, so it was just the two of them practicing spells in their free time. Remus had been the one to suggest producing patronus's; he had secretly practiced beforehand.
"Well, if you're sure, I'll join you. I don't want to be lonely until James and Peter get back."
Sirius smiled warmly. "I'd like that very much."
The walk back to the Gryffindor common room seemed to take forever. Remus' mind raced the whole way, and he couldn't seem to take his mind off his recent exchanges with his best friend. "First the talk about canines, then the uncharacteristically warm looks… It's not like him to show so much affection with his eyes." He sighed deeply. "Maybe he really is tired…"
Arriving in the common room, Sirius yawned and immediately curled up in a large velvet chair. Remus couldn't help but think how much he looked like a puppy, with his head tucked close to his knees. He blushed suddenly. "W-what…" He was flooded with a wave of confusion, followed by shame and disgust. Had he just thought of his friend as… Cute?
"No… He's my friend." Remus tried desperately to think of something else, but the obtrusive thoughts kept coming back. Sirius' face, his neck, body, everything… Remus was consumed by an overwhelming lust. It vaguely reminded him of something else, something far more sinister, and it frightened him. "This feels like…. When I'm about to become a werewolf. Like I can't control it…" He shuddered. "N-no! I refuse to be haunted by this. I'll just have to push these thoughts away. Surely I can't… Like Sirius…?" He shook his head to himself. "No. Forget about it. We're friends and nothing more."
Sirius raised his head groggily. "What time is it…?"
"…You've only been asleep a minute or two."
Sirius yawned loudly. Remus couldn't help but be reminded of a puppy again, soft and tired from a day of playing. "Right. I'm off to bed. I don't think I could cast another spell if my life depended on it!"
Remus pushed off more unwanted feelings. "R-right. I'll come with you."
Sirius paused. "You okay? You seem a bit off."
Remus' eyes betrayed him, flashing alarm for a brief moment before he was able to compose himself. "Sorry, I'm just tired as well is all. I'd like to go to bed now."
Sirius easily picked up on the subtly in Remus' tone. He was acting strange; uncharacteristically short and anxious. Maybe it came from being friends with him so long, but he knew instinctively that something was very wrong. He decided not to push it.
The two boys continued through the Gryffindor house to their beds. Upon laying down, Remus noticed how uncomfortably close his bed was to Sirius'. How had he never noticed this before? Right next to each other, pushed a tad too close, they were practically one bed. "Should I move it?" He answered his own question, "No… That would raise more suspicion. It's best to fly under the radar for a bit, act as if nothing's the matter."
As they climbed into their beds, the boys said goodnight and turned out the lights. Being so early, they were the only ones in the room. Despite this, as well as several attempts by Sirius, Remus did not engage in their usual banter. This did quite the opposite of his intention and raised more suspicion on Sirius' part.
Sirius sighed silently, thinking about the werewolf fondly as he drifted off. "If only he knew… The way I feel about him…"
Author's Note II: A short little snippet for this one, the next chapter will actually get into the good stuff. Ja ne!
