Rain on the windows
And snow on the rooftops
Winter is here
But you're too busy running
To see the quiet beauty
Of your homeland in it's peace
You're gone
In a forest
Green and silent
Filled with the hush of winter's rays
Of weakened sunlight
And shining winds of snow
And you're still running
From your home
You know you'll die
Rather than take up your crown
And it's your burden,
Your cross to bear,
But you're not ready
And you're hiding away
Though the answer—
Found amidst the crispness of
The pines and ice—
Is obvious
And you're hiding in the shadows
Because you're too scared to see the light
And you know it's waiting
For you to come home
But you can't find the courage in yourself
To leave it all behind
Even though there's nothing there
To leave.

The forest
Hears your pleas for safety
For a home
Just as it has for years
And you know that
When you can finally find the courage to leave
This place
You will search for the forest
And it will welcome you
As another shadow of the night.

Years later
You hide away
From what you know is right
Searching for the courage to leave
This place
And search for him
The forest hides you
In its pine-shrouded mystery
Cloaks you in
Its green folds
And hides you from yourself
And you're hiding in the shadows
Because you're too scared to see the light
And you know it's waiting
For you to come and find it
But you can't find the courage in yourself
To leave it all behind
Even though what was there
Is there no longer
So maybe
You can find the courage in the forest
In the way it stands
Year after year
And hides you without question
Or doubt
Just maybe
You can find courage in the forest
Just as you did years before
In the way its trees stand firm
And fall and rise
And welcome you
After trial and tribulation
As just another shadow of the night.

How did you like it? Although my forte is in the area of rhyming poetry, I have always found freeverse fascinating. I decided to try one out for myself, and BAM! Out popped this.

Do you want me to make this multi-chaptered? If so, I'll probably just add a freeverse here and there whenever they come to me. I quite enjoy writing them. = )
