In her heart, Vanessa had always known what she had to do. At that
moment it was clear. She clutched her moon amulet. What were the
daughters of the Moon? Why should I trust them? Maggie had never seemed
trust worthy. She was not worthy of this power.
Vanessa looked into the eyes of Stanton. "Take me to the Atrox," she said without fear. Stanton seemed surprised for a moment. Then he smiled. His smile made Vanessa flinch. "I knew you'd understand," Stanton wrapped his arms around her and kissed her. Vanessa pulled away, but she still hugged him tight.
Her amulet glowed brightly as she felt a dark shadow behind her. Vanessa turned slowly and faced the Atrox for the first time. Vanessa gasped and nearly fainted. Stanton pulled her up again. She heard a raspy voice whisper to her, "Come now goddess," the Atrox said, "you are not the first dark goddess and you will not be the last."
A cold laugh echoed through the room. Vanessa looked at her legs and arms. She was slowly turning invisible. Stanton grabbed her. "Look at me Vanessa," Stanton whispered. Reluctantly, Vanessa faced him. She could see the yellow in his eyes. Suddenly, her fear was gone. Her legs and hands turned visible again.
Vanessa faced the Atrox. "Take me now," Vanessa shouted, "Take me father of the dark. Evil will reign. Take me before you are taken from your children." The Atrox seemed surprised. Then she felt him smile. Vanessa's amulet glowed dangerously brighter.
"Eagerness," the Atrox said, "is a beautiful thing. Come now my Goddess, welcome to the dark." Before Vanessa could grab her amulet to call for her Catty and the others, she felt darkness entering her. She felt a burning on her neck. She looked down. Her amulet was blackening. She threw it off, it was to much of a treasure to burn.
Vanessa closed her eyes as the darkness entered her. Vanessa opened her eyes when the process was complete. Stanton smiled. Vanessa smiled back. She turned to the Atrox. She kneeled. "Father of darkness," she whispered, "she looked up and smiled. "You, Fool!" Vanessa grabbed her amulet, closed her eyes and disappeared.
A whisper of wind was all she had become. A goddess at heart, but surrounded by evil. She needed to find Maggie and the others. She flew through the night air, evil pumping through her, but she had enough goddess in her to know what to do. She was fighting the evil in her.
She saw Catty. She became visible and ran to her, her steps weakening. "VANESSA!" Catty screamed. Catty saw that Vanessa had no amulet on, and she saw that her own amulet grew brighter the closer she got to Vanessa. "Catty," Vanessa whispered, "T-t-take me to Maggie, and get the others too." Vanessa slipped away.
Catty heard the thunder. She picked up Vanessa and ran to Maggie as fast as she could. The rain falling behind her carried reminded her of the tears falling from her own eyes.
