"Aren't you the least bit attracted to me?" She spoke the words with an air of lightheartedness. It was her normal way of hiding her true emotions, her way of not being hurt. She didn't maintain eye contact with him, instead choosing to keep her eyes on the door.
She didn't think he'd actually answer the question truthfully. Vala didn't know that the truth serum hadn't completely worn off yet. That's why she had teased him with the question. She was sure they'd be back to their old banter by now.
He didn't hesitate to stand up from his seat. His look was serious, slightly pained. He entered her personal space within seconds and spoke quietly. "I am." She didn't jump, but he still surprised her.
Vala was never one to back down from a challenge. Another woman might be overcome and bat her eyelashes shyly, but not her. She turned her head to face him bravely. She, too, spoke quietly. Not just to keep from alerting the guards to their presence, but also to match his tone. "Then why don't you ever act on it?"
Again, he spoke immediately. "Because I don't want to get hurt." A gentle hand rose to stroke the side of her cheek. He stared at her lips and leaned closer. But his face remained serious.
Vala looked down at his lips for a moment, then met his eyes. "And what about me? You're hurting me, you know."
His eyes grew larger by a small fraction. "What?"
Well, if he was feeling truthful, then she could be too. "Daniel, I…"
Weapons fire.
Moment broken.
Both of them turned fully to the door. They nodded to each other quickly, no longer attempting to communicate emotions. They had to act if they were going to get off this ship alive.
