Deceit in Snow

She walked home that day with a sad heart. In one hand she held a box of sushi by the string that held it closed. On the other hand she held her school case. Her heart felt heavy. She stopped by the apartment building's door and put down her school case so that she could input her access code.

"You would stop functioning before I would," the dark haired girl said with quiet malice.

She blinked. Her hand unconsciously going to her chest where just a few hours ago a spear of raw data had pierced her organic shell. She could remember the unimaginable pain that she had felt when that spear and several others like it had riddled her petite frame. She wondered what the correct reaction should have been. She imagined that she should have screamed but at the time she was too busy dealing with a rogue agent to remember to act like a human.

She took up her bag and went up to her apartment.

It had to be done to safeguard Kyon, the person who was important to her object of observation. It had hammered into him the reality of the situation, that this was no game. It was a fatally serious matter. Now, Kyon is bound to her even more tightly. The life forms in this part of the globe had a saying: 'Save a man's life and it is yours.'

She entered her apartment and took off her shoes in the foyer.

She could smell curry cooking from the kitchen.

Before she could move, arms wrapped about her neck and there was a solid body behind her.

"Missed me?" the girl with dark hair said as she gave the smaller girl a hug.

The smaller girl answered with a slight nod. Her hand gently touched the arms about her neck and they loosened enough so that she could turn about and wrap her own arms about the other girl's waist.

Data manipulation was their specialty, but human manipulation was something that they were quickly picking up on.

Save a man's life and it is yours.

But it also works if that man believes that you saved his life.

"He is right about one thing," Asakura Ryoko said as she tilted up Nagato Yuki's face. "You do look better without glasses."

And she bent down to kiss the snow.
