Fly High
Thalia Grace was scared. She stood on the edge of a 100m building somewhere in Washington DC. The Hunters had been on the trail of a monster for some time now. She had gone to scout ahead with two others, a couple of new recruits whose names she couldn't remember. She was sure Lady Artemis would understand.
As she gazed down the building, her old fear came back to haunt her. She hated heights which was weird since her dad was Lord of the Skies. She'd decided to do it because she didn't want to be scared anymore. She knew that no one lives without fear but she felt that, if not addressed soon, her fear would consume her. Still…
The terror she had felt walking up those stair was unimaginable. Her legs had shook more and more with every step and her breathing had gotten faster until she was literally gasping. She felt the wind tugging at her, pulling her nearer and all she wanted was to run back down onto solid ground. But she couldn't back out now. She concentrated fiercely on the task at hand. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, then jumped.
And hovered. She opened one eye, then the other. She laughed. Thalia had fought many battles over the long years but none had been as hard as this one. Her fear had hindered her for many years. She remembered the embarrassment and humiliation it has caused her. It had been a long fight but she had won. It was a good feeling.
She had wanted to do this ever since Jason had told her about his ability to fly. She had been too scared before but she had determined to do it. Lady Artemis did not encourage fear. She said that, while every person, whether they are mortal or god, had some fear in them, it does no good to fuel that fear. You must try and conquer it as soon as possible. And Thalia had done it.
She flew back up to the top of the building and landed. She gazed down once more and found that the height no longer set her stomach churning. She ran off to find the other two with a feeling of victory.
She was Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus, lieutenant of Artemis and she was scared no more.
