A girl wove her way through the New York crowd, a young girl, indeed, but a highly unusual one. As others kept their eyes on electronics, or a destination, hers darted about, observing the people she passed.
"Oomphf!"
She glanced over at the person whom she had bumped into, an apology already forming on her lips. But there was no one there, and as she looked over her shoulder, she caught sight of a man, in an eyecatching black coat lined with red. He was pushing his way through the crowd, with an air of determination about him. Intrigued, she began to slip through the streets, never taking eyes off this man who fascinated her so.
She finally ducked down an alley, after seeing him dissappear into it.
She leaned against the wall of a building, and watched as he started to unlock a wooden Police Box sitting in the alley.
"Who're you?"
She stepped out of the shadows, seeing him stiffen with surprise, halfway through opening the door. She grinned a little, before repeating the question. He turned slightly, looking at her.
"Oh, me, no one really. Nobody important."
The girl tilted her head, boy-short brown curls framing her glasses.
"But you are. I've been following you. You are extremely important, I just can't seem to figure out why. So, who are you?"
He smiled a bit before replying, though without an answer.
"Is that a London accent I hear?"
"Course, it's not a New York one, is it? Now then, have you got a name?"
He laughed a little, and the girl marveled at how much it lit up his face, making him look like a much younger man.
"Well, yes, I've got a name, everyone's got a name."
"What is it then?"
"The Doctor."
Curiosity sparked in her hazel eyes, with a bit of puzzlement.
"Odd."
"What?"
"You. Your name. It sounds fake but it isn't." She raised an eyebrow. "Curiouser and curiouser."
The man, the doctor, smiled again.
"I can, read people, I guess you'd call it. I can feel something about you. Your eyes... they're so much older... and so much younger than you.
"You're a mystery, Doctor. You've traveled such a long way... but from where? You've seen everything."
The Doctor looked down at her, this tall-for-her-age, middle school, eccentric girl, and something in his eyes changed. A small hidden bit of loneliness faded.
"Would you like to see?"
Her eyes widened, and she blinked with surprise.
"Wha-"
He patted the Police Box, and looked back at her.
"This box. It's a... time machine. Anywhere in time and space. Would you like to see everything that makes me who I am?"
The girl stood there in complete shock. But her next words came without doubt. She had always been a 'leap before you look' person, making impulsive choices.
"Yes. God yes."
