Prologue
It was 20 years ago that the world began to change. Heroes and heroines popped up just when they were needed. They defeated the forces of evils and stopped any dangerous Pokemon that threatened the world. However, a certain evil has appeared, escaping the clutches of the heroes of the past. Now, a young trainer is about to start her journey, not realizing that the evil has already set its sights on her…
Chapter 1: Starter
"Nova! Wake up! Isn't today the big day!"
Nova opened her eyes and stared groggily at the ceiling. She seemed to recall that she was having a dream, but didn't know what it was about. She thought it involved her father, but she wasn't sure.
"Geez mom give it a rest! I'll be down in a second." Nova jumped out of bed, excited at the prospect that she was about to start on her big quest. She had been begging her mother to get her a Pokemon since she was little, but now that she had come of age, she knew that there was nothing stopping her. Quickly showering and getting her things together for the journey, Nova ran downstairs to see her mother preparing a cake.
"Well if it isn't my birthday girl!" Nova's mother rushed over to give her daughter a huge hug.
"Mom! I'm 16 now. Stop treating me like I'm ten or something…" Nova squirmed out of her mother's embrace and was about to leave.
"Stop right there, missy!" Nova turned to see her mother in tears. She knew why. Her father had left to continue his own journey, knowing full well he was leaving his daughter and wife behind. Nova figured her mother thought that she was doing the same thing.
"Mom, I'll be back before you know it. I just want to travel. This place is so boring and the only thing interesting is that grouchy professor."
Nova's mother cut four pieces of cake: one for Nova, one for herself, one for the professor and probably one for the professor's kid. She put three of the pieces into a container and gave them to Nova.
"Remember to eat your vegetables, don't talk to strangers and always call when you get the chance!" Nova could barely understand her between the sobs. Her mother was taking this a lot harder than Nova originally anticipated.
"I love you, mom. Remember that. I'll be home before you know it." Nova gave her mother one last hug and left her home for the past 16 years.
It was a gorgeous day outside. It was the middle of spring, and Nova absolutely loved it. The clean air, the wonderful view of the forest and no way that she was turning back. Pallet Town had never changed while she was growing up. A few houses here and there, but otherwise incredibly plain. The only thing in the town was the professor's laboratory, which she was never allowed to go into unless her father decided to bring her along. It had been about ten years since she had seen the professor, so Nova was pretty nervous to talk to him again. He was a friend of her father, but that didn't mean that she knew him all that well. The only thing that Nova knew about the professor was that he had a wife and a kid. His son was nothing like his father, and quite frankly he was kind of a brat. Nova never really liked him all that much.
Nova began to walk towards the laboratory. She wanted to get started on her journey as soon as possible. Entering the lab, Nova noticed two things. One: that bratty kid had grown into a young man, although he still looked like a complete tool to Nova. Two: the professor still looked the same after ten years.
"Ah, Nova! Finally awake I see." The professor smiled at her and motioned for her to stand by his son.
"Well the shut in finally joined us. Took you long enough." The professor's son had this stupid smug look on his face. Nova was not happy that this brat was starting at the same time she was.
"Sorry, Professor Oak. I wanted to get some beauty sleep before exploring the Kanto region." She approached the professor slowly, trying to piss off the brat as much as she could.
"Well, time to get started. I have to do this formal introduction because, well, semantics." The professor had a slip of paper and was about to start reading it when his son decided to insert a smart-ass comment.
"Really, dad? Can't we just go already? I don't have my entire life you know." Professor Oak looked at his son, let out a sigh, and began to read the speech that was printed for him.
"I'm proud to announce that you two young children will begin on your adventure. This will be a perilous journey and there will be many obstacles that you will need to overcome. But, remember to always have fun! You can take on the Pokemon League and attempt to become the new champion, or you could try your hand at doing anything else. From here on out, you both are adults. B.G., my son, I hope you learn to grow from this experience. Nova, you too will learn and grow, much like your father."
Nova rolled her eyes. Of course he brings up her father. She knew that he was trying to be nice, but it was just a huge pain in the neck.
"Now, you will each choose your beginner Pokemon. This is the first step to achieving your dreams. Go out there and make us all proud! Nova, you may choose first." B.G. gave his father a look, but Professor Oak ignored him and motioned toward the three pokeballs on the table near them.
"Before we do that, here's a gift from my mom." Nova gave the slices of cake to Professor Oak and B.G. so that her mother didn't give her hell for forgetting.
"Why, thank you Nova! You know, Yellow always did care for your father. I mean, I did train her when she was a very young trainer." B.G. ate his cake in a single bite while his father took his time eating it. They both were waiting for Nova to make her choice.
"Well, I have no idea what to choose. I mean, Squirtle is cute and all, and the Charmander will grow to be extremely powerful. However, this Bulbasaur would probably be the best choice!" Nova was about to pick the pokeball containing her future starter when Professor Oak suddenly started grinning.
"Like father like daughter…" Nova glanced at Professor Oak, and immediately chose the Charmander.
"Well, at least you still aren't angry at him." Professor Oak still had that dumb grin on his face as Nova let Charmander out of his pokeball. Charmander looked around, stared up at Nova, and proceeded to start walking out of the lab.
"Hey, wait!" Nova rushed past the Charmander and put her hands on her hips. "Don't go anywhere without me, got it Zard?" The Charmander continued to look puzzled, but obeyed.
"Well, fine, I'll choose the Squirtle then." B.G. picked up his new Pokemon, turned around and pointed at Nova. "Battle time!"
"You have got to be freaking kidding me!" Nova groaned as she started her first battle. Zard instinctually knew what to do, to the point where Nova only needed to give one command: "Kill."
"Whoa! Chill out, Nova! What the hell, it was only going to be a quick skirmish. Geez, let's go Blaster." B.G. left with his Squirtle on his tail. Nova, annoyed at the quick fight, left. She was ignoring Professor Oak, who was yelling something about an encyclopedia.
"So Zard, tell me about yourself," Nova said jokingly. She knew that only Psychic-type Pokemon could communicate, but it was still fun to try to get a conversation from her first friend.
"Well, I'm a Fire-type and quite frankly am pretty annoyed that you're my trainer." Nova stopped dead in her tracks. She looked down at Zard, who was staring up at her. "Is there something wrong, girly?"
"WHAT THE HELL?!" Nova started to run towards the lab when Zard cut her off. Due to her panicking, it did not occur to Nova that she could step over this small creature.
"Calm down! Geez, woman, you're going to scare the entire town with that infernal screaming!" Zard shook his head in disbelief. It was like this girl didn't know that Pokemon could talk.
"POKEMON. CAN'T. TALK." Nova hissed back at her smart-mouthed partner. What in the world was she going to do? Her father never mentioned being able to talk to Pokemon, but maybe her mother would know something.
Pissed off and annoyed, she stomped into her house and walked straight to her mother.
"Pokemon can't talk, right mom?" Nova's mother was doing dishes when her daughter came stomping in. She didn't expect Nova to be so freaked out by something that she herself grew up with.
"Well, they can. But it's pretty rare for someone to be able to hear them. I mean, I can, but that's because I grew up near Viridian Forest." Nova plopped into a chair and rested her head on the table. This was getting ridiculous, she thought.
"Excuse me, miss, could you explain to my trainer that this isn't very weird?" Zard had followed Nova into her home, and was attempting to converse with her mother.
"Well aren't you the cutest thing! Blue had a Charmander too, much to your father's dismay." Nova's mother grabbed some Pokemon food and fed it to Zard, who humbly accepted it without much a care in the world.
"First of all, don't call the professor by his first name. It's weird. Second of all, that's the entire reason I chose Zard in the first place. And third of all, what the hell!" Nova was getting sick of her mother and her companion becoming friendly. It was weird, and Nova needed to get started so she didn't fall behind B.G.
"Did Blue give you some pokeballs? You should get some before you get started. Oh, and did he give you your Pokedex?" Nova's mother continued to do dishes while Nova was busy figuring out what was happening.
"No and no. I mean really, why didn't you ever say I could talk to Pokemon?" Nova motioned for Zard to come to her, and he obediently obeyed.
"Well, I figured you knew considering you always talked with your father's Pikachu." Nova sat completely still as she tried to remember what her mother was talking about. Shaking her head, she got up and decided to go the lab.
"Mom, I don't remember much about Dad. And quite frankly, I don't really care. He left us and that's that. I'm going to go on my journey, and I promise on my life that I'll be back when I get bored." Nova walked out the door, with Zard following close behind. Yellow looked back at her child, and let out a sigh.
"She still seems angry at you. Hopefully you won't cross paths. After all, I'd hate to see her give you a run for your money."
