The wild stomping of boots came through every hallway, every corridor, awaking Organization members from their sleep and annoying others at their work. The only person who didn't awaken from their slumber or interrupted in the middle of business was Demyx, and that was because he was the one running.
Every hall needed to be covered- every room needed to be checked. There was no way that he was gone… there was no way that Zexion had left him.
Not after he had promised.
Dreaming… he had to be dreaming.
A quiet whisper. "Zexion?"
An even quieter reply. "What, number IX?"
"Do you… love me?"
"I can't, Demyx. We don't have hearts. It's impossible."
Silence.
"If you did have a heart, wouldn't you?"
A sigh, and the loud thud of a book closing was heard from the darkness. How could Zexion even read in the dark? Demyx didn't know. "The thing is, we don't have hearts. I don't know what I would feel, okay?"
"Common Zexy…"
"Demyx, be quiet."
More silence.
Then a sigh. "I don't even know why I put up with you like this…"
"It's because you care."
And then the room went silent again. Before he knew it, Zexion's lips were on his, just for a split second before a whisper sounded directly into his ear.
"You're right, Dem. I do care."
And now it was all gone. All of their meetings, all of their time together, it was shattered. Wasted. How could Zexion be gone? Didn't he promise that he wouldn't leave?
Demyx's head popped into the library, Vexen's lab, which he found was also empty, and even number VI's room. Nowhere did the slate-haired member linger, and he was impossible to find.
"It's true…" came a stifled sob from number IX. Even though he couldn't cry, his chest tightened and he felt… upset. "He left me…"
A portal opened, and Demyx walked through. There was nowhere to go, but anywhere would be better than the white-walled room of Zexion, a crumpled note sitting at the bottom of his trash can, the note he had failed to give Demyx when he couldn't find any words good enough to say goodbye.
Demyx,
I'm sorry I'm leaving, and I'm sorry I never told you. I know that I promised you. Don't worry… One day, I'll come back and we'll be together again. That is my true promise to you, Demyx, and this one I'll be sure not to break. Right now, I assure you that I'm thinking of you in the basements of Castle Oblivion. I hope that you're thinking of me too, and planning for the day that I come back to you. I'm also awaiting that day.
Sincerely, Zexion
PS. I care about you, Number IX, and don't let anyone- not even yourself- tell you otherwise.
And in the middle of a pitch black corridor, Demyx stopped walking. A small whisper came from the boy's lips as his hands clutched into loose fists.
"I care about you too… Zexy…"
