"Now Mike's beloved wife, Kate, would like to say a few words." As the priest announced this, Kate stood slowly form her seat, receiving a supportive pat on her leg from Nikki, her best friend. She looked into the crowd and settled her eyes on Alexandra Isabel and Stephen Josh Michael, their beautiful twin toddlers. Walking slowly to the front of the church she took a deep breath and began.

"I was going to give a speech about how much I love him and will miss him. But standing here I realise words can't capture that much emotion, If you please." Whilst saying this she had walked over to the organ, and gestured to the pianist that she might take over. "I haven't played in a long time, but now I know it is the only way to say goodbye."

Gently running her slender fingers over the keys, she reacquainted herself with the instrument she had let go of when she left her old life behind at age 16. Even after nearly 20 years she knew it better than she knew herself. Beginning to play, she paused for a moment, before opening her mouth to sing.

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head

Her voice broke slightly, and she cleared her throat, before allowing her sweet, powerful voice to fill the church.

Night is falling
You've come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore

Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass

Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say: we have come now to the end White shores are calling
You and I will meet again

And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West

She finished the song and turned, wiping tears from her eyes, and was astonished to see the whole church standing and doing the same "Goodbye, Mike" she whispered, before returning to her seat, and promising to love him forever.

The song is Into the West by Annie Lennox.
