Keep me safe inside

Come Back...

...Kiss me and come back...

Jacob...

Long lashes fluttered ever so slightly in the faint light of a dawn fighting its way past the faded curtain. The light August breeze slipped past the cracked window behind the fabric to ghost across too warm skin. Jacob Black shivered.

"Jacob," a voice breathed near the window. A muscle in his cheek twitched at the sound, so very familiar yet completely foreign at the same time. Another gentle wave of cool air danced into the room and he tasted the air.

Lavender, freesia, jasmine.

Her scent, unmistakable, yet there was just a hint of something else. Something slightly sweeter.

"Come back to me, Jacob," the tender voice whispered in his ear. Slowly, he opened his eyes.

It was almost impossible. She was even more beautiful than he had ever imagined. Her long hair, bone straight, fell around her like a cloak and he large reproachful eyes just caught the faint light seeping into the room perfectly. Her creamy skin created a blank canvas for the flowing aquamarine dress that clung upon her frame as if it were merely dancing upon it. The sight of her nearly took his breath away.

"Bella?" his sleep-hoarse voice whispered. She nodded once with a warm smile playing across her lips.

Bella held her hands out to Jacob, and he obediently rose from the bed. He exhaled the breath he had been holding. He stood before her for several moments (or possibly days, he couldn't decide), just taking in the sight of her. Finally, he thought, this is what I've been waiting for.

In a fraction of a second, Bella was in his arms. She tilted her head up and Jacob swore that his heart skipped a beat as he bent in response, kissing her fully. As he wrapped his strong arms tighter, pressing her close to his heated body, he noticed the change.

Her skin felt like scorching ice.

Jacob pulled away from her cautiously, holding her at arms' length. A tear streamed down his cheek as he watched Bella's expression fall, shame and apology clouding her eyes. He sighed and pulled back his curtain. Bella's fair complexion glistened over with a sheen so brilliant, Jacob swore that he was looking into the glaring sun. The light glittered over every inch of her skin as if she was carved from pure diamond, and he understood.

She had changed.

"Jacob," she whispered sorrowfully. A bird chippered nearby. "Jacob come back," her voice whispered again, but the birdsong became stronger.

Jacob opened eyes he hadn't realized he had closed. Around him, the wilderness buzzed with life. How could this beautiful nature seem so alive in his presence when a part of him seemed to die everyday in a neverending circle?

The wolf rose and stretched, rolling from his front paws to his haunches then shaking, hoping to release the dream from his mind with that simple movement.

"Jacob," a voice sounded behind his ear, but it was not Bella. The wolf growled softly.

"Jacob, it's time," Sam's voice filled his ears. "Come home."

Reluctantly, the wolf turned and started the trek back to La Push.
