I was dying, most people assume that a child of only 5 years would not know what death is, but I am no ordinary child.
London: 2 weeks after the incident at the pool.
I was cold the chill of the evening was seeping into my bones and the ragged dress I wore did nothing to prevent it. I was truly alone now. I had thought the first orphanage I had lived in had been bad but the second one was much worse. When I arrived at the cast iron gates of Miss Liverstones' orphanage I had believed that it would be just like the first orphanage, strict rules ,endless streams of potential parents all with their eyes on the "normal" children and a beating or two if you did something unwanted. I was wrong. The moment the car that had delivered me drove out of the small car port, the woman who had been waiting to receive me, turned and walked off. I ran to catch her, wondering what was going on and, when I caught up, tugged at her coat sleeve. She turned sharply and, with a small whoosh of air and a loud smack, slapped me across the cheek. "What do you think your doing? "she yelled, eyeing me as if I were something smelly and revolting that might rub off on her if she didn't get away from it fast enough .I replied quickly with a small "coming with you ma 'dam", but instead of grabbing my hand and roughly pulling me along as I suspected, she laughed. "we're full, you stupid child"(if only she knew how far from the truth 'stupid' was )"No lassie it's the streets for you" and with that she stormed through the gates closing them behind her and leaving me by myself in a completely foreign world.
2 weeks later.
As I crouched by the bins in an vacant side ally in London, I accepted the inevitable. I was dying, most people assume that a child of only 5 years would not know what death is but I am no ordinary child. As I sat there feeling my life slip away I made a wish , I wished that I had had the chance to show someone who I really was to tell them my only secret .I don't know whether it was my wish or just pure coincidence that fulfilled my wish, but I will be forever grateful for it. Just as I realised that my remaining strength was leaving me, I heard heavy footfalls and loud panting( I almost believed in god in that moment,almost.).Three figures came into view, the first was dressed in black and carrying something that glinted in the sunlight, he appeared to be running from the other two, one of which was a short, stocky man with blue eyes, wearing a woollen jumper and the other of which was a tall, lanky man with dark curly hair like mine and eyes that were a funny mix of blue, grey and green that reminded me of my own but with less blue around the iris. I let the first man pass me but as the tall man and his companion passed,, something told me to call out, somehow I knew this tall man was the one I would tell my secret
