Ryuk sat on the ceiling, noisily eating an apple.
"You know Raito, you haven't been writing in the Death Note very often lately."
Light looked up and raised his eyebrow.
"The crime rate has dropped at an astonishing rate, there have been no new crimes reported in over a week. I think my message is sinking in."
"I think you've gone soft ever since you got the new girlfriend." Ryuk noted, swallowing the last of his apple.
"Ryuk, my girlfriend is a cursed spirit who originally wanted to kill me. When have I had the chance to go soft?"
Ryuk was about to respond when there was a knock at the door.
"Raito! Mum and Dad want you downstairs a minute!" Sayu's voice called from the other side of the door, causing Light to roll his eyes.
"I'm coming." He replied, getting up off his bed and walking to the door.
"Hey Raito, bring me another apple!" Ryuk laughed as Light glared at him before leaving the room. He had been tempted to go with him but he couldn't be bothered. So he just sat there, staring at the room upside down. He wondered how long Light would be, they seemed to be having a lot of family matters ever since the Kira case, maybe they were getting...
"CCCRRROOOOAAAKKK!"
He turned his head, his usual manic grin on his face as he saw the pale ghost.
"Kayako, long time no see. You've literally just missed him but he'll be..."
As Kayako continued to croak, Ryuk stopped talking. Her throat may have been crushed but he wasn't a Shinigami for nothing... he knew what she was trying to say.
He frowned slightly, turning the right way around and looking at her.
"What kind of favour?"

"Ryuk, when are you going to tell me why you made me lie to my parents that I was spending the day at a friend's then dragged me all the way out here?"
"Where would be the fun in that Raito?" Ryuk replied, laughing slightly.
"I'm serious Ryuk, what's so important that I had to be about ten miles away from my house to see?"
"Not what Raito," Ryuk replied, stopping and turning to face him. "Who." He looked meaningfully over Light's shoulder.
Light frowned, turning to follow his gaze... and gasped.
Stood there next to a cherry blossom tree, her long hair brushed loose and her dark eyes staring at him... was Kayako. But not Kayako the ghost, she looked exactly like she had done in the photos of her. She was... alive.
"Kayako? How..."
"You'd be amazed at what power the Shinigami possess." She said softly, using her voice for the first time in years. She looked at Ryuk. "Thank you."
"Thank you can come later; you owe me a whole orchard of apples." Ryuk responded, laughing slightly.
"Well then, here's the first payment." Kayako replied, throwing an apple to him before turning back to Light.
"You asked him to do this? But, I don't..."
She pressed a finger to his lips.
"One day." She murmured softly. "Just one day. No death, no curse, no rage... just you and me together. That was my request. That is all I want."
Light stared at her.
"You did this to be with me?" A smile spread across his face and he removed her finger, leaning forward and kissing her gently. "Who am I to deny a lady her request?"
They smiled at each other as they pulled apart and started to walk down the street.
"I guess this is a proper date then? So, was making out in my room not enough anymore?"
Kayako laughed, giving him a playful push.
"Honestly Raito, you are so immature."
"I can't be that bad, I managed to get an older woman."
"You got me? How do you know I'm not just keeping you for my own amusement?"
The two of them made their way along, laughing and teasing each other, their hands entwined. Just like a new couple on a first date.
Just one day for a love that would last a lifetime... and beyond the grave.
