She found him lying on the grassy hill in their yard, his peaceful vibrations echoing through the ground. The wind rustled the grass, and there were only a few wispy clouds in the otherwise blue sky. It was a perfect Spring day.
"Oh, hey Toph," he said, grinning as he airbended himself upright. Toph tried to force a grin back.
"How'd your trip to the Healers go?" He asked. She could tell by his joyful voice and happy vibrations that he already expected everything to be alright. He was always the optimist.
"I-" Toph choked, angrily wiping her cheeks so he wouldn't see the tears. "Aang, I..." How was he going to react? What if he stopped loving her? What if he went off with another woman? What if...what if...
"Toph?" He said, his smile faded now. "Toph? What's wrong? Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
She shook her head. "No, Aang...I'm fine. I am fine..."
All the possibilities of how he would react clouded her mind. What if...what if...
"Toph, please tell me! Toph!"
The earthbender lowered here eyes to 'look' at her feet. At first no noise came out when she moved her mouth, but then she choked the words out.
"I...I can't...I can't get pregnant."
Stunned silence.
"I'll...I'll understand if you want to...you know..."
"What?" Aang said, not understanding. "What do you mean?"
"You know," Toph mumbled. It took a few moments, before Aang finally understood. He grabbed her chin gently, and pulled her face up to look at him. The vibrations rolling off him were a little angry.
"You think I would like to have a child with another woman?" Aang demanded. Toph's temper flared a bit.
"But you want to revive the Air Nomads so much!" She argued in a sharp tone. "You're the last one! Isn't that important!?"
He chuckled slightly and kissed her on the lips sweetly.
"But I love you more then that," he said afterward.
Toph mumbled a bit under her breath about 'stupid Twinkle Toes' and 'idioctic Airbenders'. Aang chuckled again and leaned in for another kiss.
"So then that's it?" she said before their lips met. "After you, that's it? No more airbenders?"
Aang shook his head. "I don't believe I'm the last one. There's got to be more out there."
"I guess."
A small moment of silence.
"So that's our next adventure, then?" Toph asked. "Finding more airbenders?"
Aang grinned and nodded.
What if we can't find more airbenders? Then what? What if, after that, there's even more pressure to keep the airbending bloodline flowing? What if...what if...
Toph shook her head and shoved the what if's to the back of her mind. She was happy to go on another adventure again. Anyway, she was the queen of acting rashly, without any thought for the consequences. After all...
In life there is no time for what if's.
Okay, so out there in our brilliant fandom, there's a bisonload of Preggers!Taang stories. You know, making more little airbenders, etc. etc. But what if Toph couldn't get pregnant, or there was something wrong with Aang?
Well, obviously Aang's not going to ditch our Tophy, so the only other options is...AN AWESOME NEW QUEST FOR AIRBENDERS!
Get Appa saddled, we're goin' on an adventure! 8D
