Sleeping Beauty

-x-x-x-

Shifting the tray into his left hand, he raises the right and raps lightly on the door with the knuckles of the other.

Once. Twice. Thrice. No answer.

He waits for a few moments and knocks once again. Rat-tat-tat. And once again, there is no reply. How very odd.

One eyebrow rises as he ponders this. She would normally have answered the door by now, or at least given him verbal consent. The fact that she has done neither is intriguing.

He reaches for the handle of the door, hand fumbling in the dark for a moment before locating it. Finding that the smooth metal is pleasantly cool to the touch, he twists it and opens the door.

Pat. Pat. His feet make no sound in their worn leather shoes as he enters the room. He squints and is able to make out the dying embers in the hearth. A few feet away he sees what he thinks is the flickering stub of a candle. And... What is that in the chair in front of the hearth? Could it be... He moves forward and smiles when he recognizes what he sees. Yes, of course.

She sits in her chair, asleep. Her blonde hair covers part of her face, mouth slightly open. Her hand holds open a book on her lap, but he is unable to see what it is.

He sets the tray down on the coffee table. Chink. The china piece rattle gently against each other. Reaching down, he lovingly brushes away a golden curl threatening to enter her mouth. He picks up the book and holds it in one hand and holding her place with the other. Fingers tracing over the curled letters, he reads the title with his fingertips. Contes de ma Mère l'Oye. Tales of Mother Goose.

Turning back to her place in the book, he can see a picture of a beautiful blonde girl lying on a bed. It is obvious she is asleep. Next to the bed stands a tall man with raven locks. Sleeping Beauty. He turns the page and smiles softly to himself when he sees the classic ending. The prince wakes the princess with love's first kiss, and they live happily ever after.

When will he get his?

Thud. He places the book on the table and leans down. Slipping one arm under her knees and the other supporting her neck, he turns and walks into the adjoining chamber, her personal quarters.

There is no light in the room, but it doesn't bother him. He gently places her on the bed and pulls the covers over her. He gazes at her for a moment and, before he realizes has leaned down until his lips are an inch away from hers.

"Good night, princess," he whispers under his breath. He closes the distance bewteen them and places a chaste kiss upon her lips. Smiling down at her sleeping features, he kisses her forehead once and leaves the room. As he closes the door behind him, he swears that he hears her speak in return.

"Sleep well, my prince..."

Xirysa Says: I wanted to try a new style, actually. You can tell at the beginning. Please tell me how this format works, alright? Hehe, read Sleeping Beauty to my little cousin earlier this week and had this floating around my head screaming "WRITE ME!" as a result. And you know how a good idea is - once you get one, you have to write it down! And I'm sorry this is a bit late. Please don't hate me. Lawl I can totally see this scene in my mind - probably since I'm the author. Oh well. And as always, please review! And critique. -nods- Critique is good. Yes, I did my research on the origins of Sleeping Beauty, but if you find any mistakes please let me know.
