This is the first chapter of my version of fallout 76, where all the factions are still alive and it's single player.

We called ourselves the free states, I was never totally clear why except that we didn't want to listen to other people. I sat in a bunker by myself for 4 years after the bombs fell, West Virginia never got a direct hit I guess because the radiation faded pretty fast. Eat when hungry, drink when thirsty, sleep when tired, it honestly was an incredibly boring time. I would radio the other free states, talk to them for hours while we listened to pre-war radio plays and that was the most exciting part of my day. I heard about vaults of course, there is a super public one near Flatwoods and a few more sprinkled around somewhere. Obviously if I were in one of those vaults I wouldn't feel quite as lonely, but as a former Vault-Tech University student I also know that I would lose my sanity. By the way, my name is Madeleine but call me Maddy. I'm 26 years old and I'm reasonably sure I'm bisexual, I haven't actually seen a real man or woman for four years. Point is, today is my first day leaving the bunker since the bobs dropped, sensors say radiation levels are "unhealthy but not lethal or physically disabling". That is to say that I will definitely get irradiated but not to the extent that it damages my chances of survival.

For a Vault-Tech U graduate I don't actually know much about radiation, but I think it's safe to assume that I will find some weird stuff out here. I am actually the only free state member east of the mountains since I set up my bunker in the woods near Vault-Tech U and the airport. All the other members are in the swamp north of Watoga and I am honestly not sure why, we have radios we didn't actually have to set up within walking distance of each other I guess that was just convenience afterwards. After all, fixing the world is a war, and I am reasonably sure that war never changes.
