"Please?"
"No."
"Pretty please?"
"No."
"Pretty plea-"
"Aero." The corners of my lips raised into a smile. Maybe this was the one? Maybe she'll finally let me go? She raised her head from the paperwork on her desk, her crows feet eyes staring deep into my soul with an intensity I'd never seen her display. "No matter how many times you ask the answer remains the same." With that statement, her eyes returned to her work.
My shoulders dropped with my smile. "Headmistress… Aunty?"
"You know not to call me that during school hours." She scolded. "You fully know why you can't leave. Now, if you mind." I pouted in disappointment.
"But I'm doing so well in my studies. I'm in the top ten in my class. And-"
"Aero Deforest!" I shrunk back. The Headmistress sharply rose from her chair, finger trained at me. "The issue on the table isn't about how well you've been doing! Or how high you rank! You've known the rules of this academy the day you were sworn in!" Her chest heaved as her sharp words cut my skin. Her eyes closed. She massaged the bridge of her nose as she sat back down. She sighed in exhaustion. "I'm sorry, nephew, but I can't allow you to leave… So please, return to your room and don't ask again."
"Yes...Headmistress." I made the salute, your right fist covered by your flat left hand, and bowed. I pivoted out of the room and shut the door behind me, I was left in silence. Dusk in Halora had a strange beauty, Normally, the school was a buzz. Students would make their way in and out of classes, making time to chat among each other. The oak floors creaked under my weight as I made my way back...
"It's so unfair!" She treats me like a child!" I jumped back into my bed, fuming at my aunt's words. Tara, my roommate, didn't even look up from the novel she was reading.
Groaning, she countered. "You're fifteen, meaning you are a child." Tara raised an eyebrow at my supposed problem. I glared at her in return.
"Now you know-." I huffed. "Nevermind." She closed her book with an audible *thump*. She sat up and looked at me with forced interest. She laid her head in her palm.
"Why do you wanna leave so bad?" She asked. I sat up and returned her gaze.
"It's so boring here." I lied. She scanned me over, automatically sensing the lie. Dissatisfied, she asked again.
"Try again. Why do you wanna leave so bad?"
"..."
"Look, you made me stop reading. So now, I expect an answer. Why do you wanna leave?"
"I wanna do something." Her eyebrows raised.
"Something?"
"I wanna be a hunter."
Her brows furrowed and her mouth straightened. Her eyes narrowed in inspection, trying to sense my sincerity. Her forced interest became genuine.
"What?" She asked
"I wanna be a -"
"No. No. I heard what you said…but why?" Her features were painted in confusion.
"Tara. People are dying...The Grimm are getting worse every day and we." I pointed her and then to myself. "Us Mages, aren't doing anything. We have this amazing power, we can do so much." I looked to gauge her reaction. Sensing that she was following along, I kept going. "But we don't, don't you think that's wrong? Don't you think that if we have the power to help, we should?"
We choked on silence. Tara's amber eyes met mine. Before long, she found a reply. "Aero, you know fully well why we stay up here." She rose from her bed in our shared room and made her way towards me. Sitting next me, her chocolate hands took mine. "We have these abilities, yes. But, if word got out that magic exists. That magic, the ability to bend reality to your very will, is something that could be taught. I'm sure you know what would happen..."
"Yeah, but maybe if."
"Aero." She let go of my hands. "You know we can't." She went back to her side of the room and went back to reading. I sighed in defeat.
"I guess you're right."
"Of course, I can't remember when I was wrong." She said smirking. "Now, goodnight."
"Goodnight..." I said. As I stared at the ceiling, restlessness wouldn't leave. Then something came to my mind. A thought…
Deep within the library's selves, I pulled a book off. "Verdict..." I mumbled. The name on the cover.
I ran my hand over the leather bound casing, the rich gold trimmings felt like heaven against my skin. The library was pitch black, the only source of light being the tip of my finger. The result of the "Lux" spell. Slipping the book within my cloak's inner pocket, I prowled out of the library. With book in tow, I had one last stop to make.
"This is suicide..." I mumbled quietly. "If she finds out..." I slicked through Halora's halls to find what I was after. Before long, I stood in the museum room. Artifacts lined it's marble walls, but the apple of my eye was the relic in the center.
An amulet set on a silver stone pedestal, it's gold shining even brighter in pitch blackness. Slowly, my fingers brushed against it. Emblazoned upon it, a magic circle with a chiseled sun in the middle. A crescent moon and a star orbited around the edges. My fingers wrapped around it, then something filled me. A force beyond me, a force beyond mana, a force beyond aura… I drew back sharply, but it called to me. The amulet was calling me. I grabbed it again and the force came again. I slid the amulet into my pocket and edged out of the room.
This was it...This was really it. Under the shattered moon of Remnant, I stood on the ground of the school, The gate inches away from me. I was way too far in to give up now. I looked back at Halora, one last time. My heart pounded against my ribs and the ground beneath me rocked gently. With a deep breath, I left Halora's walls behind...
