Your Eyes

The song I chose is entitled "your eyes" from the award winning Broadway musical and movie "RENT" by Jonathan Larson Sung by Adam Pascal in the Original Broadway Cast version of the play and the movie. This is the song the character Roger Davis (Adam Pascal) wrote for the character Mimi Marquez (Daphne Rubin Vega/ Rosario Dawson.) as she appears to die.

Most songs have poetic technique. In this song I have pointed out three. One poetic technique used is rhyme. One example of rhyme in this song is:

"How'd I let you slip away

When I'm longing so to hold you

Now I die for one more day

'Cause there's something I should have told you"

Away and day rhyme, and hold you and told you rhyme.

Another example of poetic technique is repetition. Repetition is used in the line:

"I should tell you

I should tell you"

My last example of poetic technique is imagery. Imagery is used in the lines.

"The night you came into my life

Where there's moonlight

I see your eyes"

This puts the image in your head of when Mimi and roger talk for the first time. When Mimi knocks on Roger's door and enters his flat and roger comments her hair in the moonlight.

A lot of songs such as your eyes are just like poetry. So next time you think poetry is boring think about one of your favorite songs how much it's like poetry!

Thank you
