Alternate ending to the Twilight Series: Edward lets Bella get OLD.
A scene I could see at Bella's deathbed: Edward POV
Kinda short, btw.
The hospital room felt ice cold, and my dead heart felt like it would burst in pain. My mind spun wildly as I held Bella's hold, wrinkled hands. She smiled at me, sending shivers down my spine. Every time she smiled, it was just one more flash of the face of the girl I'd first fallen in love with. My tearless sobs were broken as Bella caressed my face.
"Don't," She whispered, her voice was cracked and dehydrated. She looked up to her nurse, with pleading eyes. The nurse scurried off to get her some water. "Edward, you're the one who wouldn't change me. You knew this would happen." Tears were streaming down her eyes, and I knew she was right. I just hadn't expected her to die like this.
I'd been hoping for her to go peacefully in her sleep, but no. She had been forsaken with cancer on her eighty fourth birthday. The diagnostic had come two years ago, and I'd been in withering emotion pain since. She was still beautiful and dazzling of course, but she looked like she could break at the slightest touch, not only by me, but by all the frail humans in the world.
"I know, Bella, I know." Had I been right to choose mortality for her? I couldn't see how I could have been right like this. As an immortal, she could have lived forever, without the constant worry of dangers only affective on humans. But that would have meant destroying her soul.
"Edward," she whispered my name in a broken voice. I looked up to her beautiful brown eyes. Her tears were still flowing relentlessly, and I knew that her pain and suffering was my fault, as was my own.
"Bella," I held her hand to my face, and watched a smile stretch across her face. "Do me a favor." She said thoughtfully. I quickly nodded. "Anything."
"Don't kill yourself when I'm gone." She said, and each word weighed heavily. Her face was broken now, twisted in angels of agony which I did not understand. I knew she's asked this me this before, but not with such pain in her eyes. She took a deep broken breath. "A world without you, I can't imagine it, so please, please⦠don't, ever kill yourself."
It was hard to glare at her with such sadness in her voice. "Bella, I've told you already. I can't. I can't live without you. You're asking me to stay in this world for eternity, without you. That's hell, Bella. Absolute hell. I can't do that." I sighed as her face dropped even more. Was that possible?
Her tears flowing still, "Please?" Her request was in no more than a whisper. I couldn't refuse her this time. My one and only lie to her, I nodded, and she took a deep breath. "Thank you." She sighed heavily, and closed her eyes for a brief moment. Her heart thudded and stuttered again and again.
"Bella?" My voice was panicked, "I love you Edward, I love you." I kissed her lips softly and pulled back to watch her eyes close, for the last time. Her monitor stopped, but I didn't need it. I'd heard her heart take its last beat long before it had. I heard the nurse scrambling back into the room, but I was already at the door. I took one last look at my Bella, then left to retrieve my tickets to Italy. "I love you too, Bella."
