"Me-owth." Maggie groaned and pulled her pillow over her head. The Meowth tapped her arms repeatedly. "Me, Me." She sighed into the pillow and threw it to the end of the bed. Meowths face filled her vision. They stared at each other for a long moment before the Meowth continued with its mission and started tapping her face. Maggie brushed his hands away and sat up.
"I'm up, I'm up, get off." The Meowth jumped off her bed and left the room. She stuck her tongue out at his retreating back and got up completely. She rummaged through her closet trying to find the summer clothes buried under all the winter clothes.
"Why did I put these on top, alola is sunny." She threw on the first summer clothes she found, a pair of white shorts and a yellow shirt, and left the room.
Her mum sat at the table drinking coffee watching Meowth play with the boxes still stacked in the corner.
"Finally up are you?" Her mum said laughing slightly. Maggie smiled sheepishly as she walked to the kitchen nook. There wasn't much food in the kitchen yet so she settled for the weird alolan cereal her mum had found at the store. Once done she sat at the table. "You'd better eat fast, the starter Pokemon are being given out today until 3 and it's half past 11 now so the line's going to grow." Maggie froze, her spoon halfway to her mouth.
"Right…what are the starter Pokémon here?" Her mum gave her a small smile as she walked to the sink and cleaned her mug.
"Popplio, Rowlet and Litten I showed you a picture of them in the brochure, remember?" Maggie hummed and focused on finishing her cereal.
Once finished she cleaned up and went back to her room. With a low sigh, she grabbed her backpack and flip-flops and prepared to leave. At the front door, she stopped and turned to her mum.
"If I decide I don't want any of the Pokemon, do I still have to choose one?" Her mum sighed and hugged her.
"Of course not sweetie but." She pulled back and knelt face to face with Maggie. "Promise me you'll at least give it some thought and talk to some of the kids, okay?" Maggie nodded with a relieved grin. "Good." Her mum kissed her forehead and went back to the TV. Maggie stood there for a moment longer before turning and leaving the house.
The sun was shining brightly, causing the mud path in the distance to shimmer and distort. Maggie had barely stepped off the deck when a horde of children came stampeding out of the city and up the grassless part of route one. She shifted her bag on her shoulders and began the short hike following the kids to Iki town.
The route was pretty short and usually empty with only a few trainers practising at the top. Today it was full of kids training their new starters or rushing to get to Iki town on time. She stood awkwardly to the side of the path as a battle began blocking the stairs. On both side of the battle were impatient kids wanting to get past. The battle didn't last long. Both were new Pokemon with a big type advantage. The battle ended sooner than she would have liked and she was free to head up the stairs.
