Bones fanfic is my usual beat but I was challenged to do this one and it wouldn't let me go 'til I did. Reviews would be great since I haven't ventured into LTM fanfic before.

The Scarlet Thread

Blood.

She'd stopped by because of him.

So much blood.

He said she'd lied and he was rarely wrong.

Blood.

The coffee and donuts she'd brought to share crashed to the floor, the dark liquid mixing in a morbid blend.

Blood.

A million thoughts raced through her mind as she tried in vain to staunch the flow.

Blood on her hands.

She knew she was too late.

Creeping up her wrists.

It was pouring out too quickly.

So much blood.

Fingers and hands that had once made jewelry with the silent little girl pressed hard against the gaping hole.

Her arms were slick with it.

The worst was when the flow stuttered, then trickled, then stopped.

Far too much had been lost.

She was running on auto-pilot. Doing what had to be done. Holding her composure together by a tiny thread.

It covered her like a pair of scarlet kid-gloves.

Voices asked questions. Questions she couldn't answers. Answers she didn't want to face so she hung up and sought out the lone fixture in her universe that could enfold her. Ground her in reality.

So much blood, Cal.

"...and then I called you."
