For Marisol, Melanie, Heathers, Nic, Mallory, and Rachel.
Author's Notes: After watching "Wrong Is Right", the second season opener about twenty times and hearing in my mind the angry voices of all of my Cabot/Munch enthusiasts, I decided to write this short fic about the very first time they met…and their reaction to each other. So, enjoy.
When Cragen had told him and Monique Jeffries to go and see how good the new ADA was, John Munch had NO idea that his boss was telling him to go meet the woman that he would marry several years (about three) later… the woman who would, after Gwen, be the love of his life. He wasn't even sure what to expect from the ADA. What he got was anything far beyond his normal expectations for an ADA.
When he first laid eyes on her, his heart nearly stopped. She was beautiful. She was wearing a burgundy top and cream-colored skirt that showed off her long legs. She'd tied her hair back into a ponytail and was holding a pair of glasses with square lenses in one hand as she paced around the room, reiterating what John had asked her to do. She carried herself well and John was intoxicated by her beauty, her charm, her voice, her smell, everything. Apparently, she didn't have a problem getting a warrant for Radial Velocity. She was confident, which was important, at least to him and he was having difficulty making his attraction to her not obvious. He didn't want Jeffries or this Alex Cabot to know about it… or even get a hint of it. Unfortunately, Alex was much more perceptive than he thought… and extremely receptive.
Alex wasn't too sure what to expect when she met Monique Jeffries and John Munch. She was careful in her observations of the two. She didn't want to give off any signals. But, when she gave John a careful examination, she couldn't hold herself back from thinking all sorts of things about him. He was a little old for her, yes, but he seemed nice and there was an air of wit and charm about him that she liked. He was reasonably handsome for a man his age and she liked that. Maybe she could convince him to have coffee with her or something sometime. She could tell that he was impressed by her connections and within no time, she had their warrant and they had to part.
For some reason, he couldn't make himself leave and told Monique to go wait for him; he'd be with her in a minute. He went back to Alex's office, shut the door and said, "Have dinner with me."
The request was so abrupt that it caught her off guard.
"What the heck did you just say?" she asked, looking up at him with wide, shocked eyes, her glasses falling down her nose. She'd been working on paperwork.
"I said 'Have dinner with me'." He said. "Would you? I'd really like to spend the evening in your company."
Her expression changed from shocked to pleased. "Are you trying to ask me out on a date, Detective? Wouldn't that be a little improper?"
"Does the whole world have to know?" he said, peering at her from over the rims of his trademark glasses.
She smiled and its beauty nearly blinded him. "All right." She said. "Dinner it is."
He smiled at her and then said, "Do you know where the NY Waterways Ferry is?"
"Yes, why?"
"Because I want you to meet me there on Friday night at 7:30." He replied. "I know of this great Russian restaurant in Jersey that I think you'll like."
She smiled. "All right. I'll be there."
