Hey, D-scythe here. Just wanted to reiterate that I have no hold whatsoever
on Gundam Wing. Also, The Things They Carried belongs to the author Tim
O'Brien.
Note: This has nothing to do with any of my current story arcs, it's being written on a whim because it's been far too long since I've written something like this.
The Things They Carried
reinterpreted in the Gundam Wing universe
An homage
What they carried was largely a function of necessity. Guns, ammunition clips, bombs, detonators, remotes. Heero Yui carried a remote detonator and a revolver almost everywhere he went. Trowa Barton carried a set of three throwing knives.
What they carried was a function of superstition. Crosses, swords, flight goggles. Duo Maxwell carried a bible in the pocket next to his gun and the name of his adopted father. Chang Wuffie carried a sword and the regret of being defeated while wielding it. Trowa Barton carried a clown's mask and the name of a madman's son. Quatre carried his father's sense of pacifism and his mentor's sense of wrong and right. Heero carried a girl's love and the name of an assassinated dignitary.
All five carried a mobile suit to Earth and the hopes and fears of mankind on their shoulders.
Heero carried the burden of being a perfect soldier in an imperfect world. He carried Zechs's grudge and Milliardo's hatred. He carried the ZERO system and Wing ZERO across a diamond flecked battle field to create a peace his actions destroyed. He carried Releena Peacecraft's heart and hopes and fears and dreams throughout his months at war. He carried the dream of a United Earthsphere in the form of a blazing beam sword.
Duo Maxwell carried a sense of humor and easygoing personality. He carried a priests outfit and a cross. He carried a friendliness and a pension for getting into trouble. He carried a knowledge and memory of life as a street orphan. He carried the name of Shinigami, God of Death, Great Destroyer.
Trowa Barton carried the memories of a mercenary, a soldier of fortune for as long as memory allows. He carried name of a conqueror who was still just a boy. He carried Operation Meteor, but wouldn't carry it out. He carried a flute across the desert, and a mask across the void. He carried the terror of amnesia, and the love of an adopted sister. He carried the burden of having a choice, and choosing war.
Quatre Rabberba Winner carried the guilt of every person he had to kill in his heart. He carried the disapproval of his father, and the love of his twenty-nine sisters. He carried the shame of succumbing to the ZERO system, and the terror of nearly killing his friend as a result. He carried the enigma that was Dorothy from the Sanq Kingdom to a control room on Libra. He carried the Gundams through their final battle as a leader that did not want to fight.
Wuffie carried the memory of watching his wife be killed and his home and family destroyed. He carried his hate of Trieze and his love of justice. He carried a mistrust of women and a contempt for civilians. He carried the lesson of true strength and learned it from watching a young girl and her grandfather, along with a crowd of inocents, stand up to a brat named Maramaia who would destroy all they had fought for. He carried Triez's ghost.
Duo carried love.
Trowa carried silence.
Wuffie carried hate and doubt.
Quatre carried remorse.
Heero carried the face of a girl and her dog.
They all carried the future throughout their war. They carried things that were essential to their survival, and to the survival of man-kind. Never forget the things they carried.
