*author's note: As you will see this is a song story and a dark AU, so be warned. Bold text is Dean's thoughts and italics are the song. The song is mama tried by merle haggard by the way.

Mama tried:

Dean made his way to the prison's cafeteria hall, along with the other inhabitants of San Quentin state penitentiary . He then took a seat on one of the crappy little plastic chairs provided by the state for the prison concert. He had no idea who was performing but hoped it was a rock band-it would be nice to have a break from all that rap bullshit that was so beloved by the other prisoners. When he realized that the band on the stage was a country outfit, he smirked-someone was going to pay for this idiocy, preferably with their life.

Dean was meticulously plotting his next exploit, when his thoughts were interrupted by the latest song.

one and only rebel child, from a family meek and mild:

Huh, except for the only child part ,that described his dynamic with his family pretty well. Dean began to pay attention.

...despite all my Sunday learning, toward the bad I kept on turning.

Yeah, Mary had got pretty into religion after dad died. Dean couldn't remember which church. it was something southern-Baptist perhaps? Yeah, Baptist, that was it. He'd never bought into it. He spent as much time in the local poolroom, as she did at church. And she spent a lot of time in church.

Till mama couldn't hold me anymore.

He still remembered the day he'd left. Sam had bawled. Well, sorry Sam, but life's a bitch.

I turned twenty-one in prison serving life without parole...Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied. That leaves only me to blame because mama tried.

Today was his 21-st birthday-how's that for irony. And he was sorry for what he done to mom, to Sam, and yeah, it was his fault. And he definitely regretted it, but what he'd done to all those pretty women-he didn't regret it for a second. The music ended and dean walked back to his cell, with the rest of the convicts, smiling at the thought of what he was going to do when he got out.
