How, why, what for?

When Yuugi had been little, he had had a goldfish called Kin(1) as a pet. His grandfather Sugoroku had bought Kin for him since he had felt that Yuugi needed at least something else than him to keep him company. They couldn't take cats or dogs because Sugoroku was allergic to them.

But Yuugi had loved Kin. He had always taken care of his little fish as best as he could. When he had felt like he needed a friend to talk to, Yuugi had always sat on the chair that was next to Kin's aquarium. He had told the little fish all his troubles and everything about his day, sometimes while feeding Kin. Having Kin to talk to, Yuugi had felt more comforted in his loneliness.

But nothing lasts forever. By the time Yuugi turned nine, it was easy to see that Kin was weakening. He no longer swam all around in the aquarium, merely stayed put in one place, breathing slowly(2). It almost looked like Kin was choking. And one morning, Yuugi found Kin merely floating on top of the water, not moving.

Yuugi had immediately called his Grandpa, asking what was wrong with Kin. "He's dead. I'm sorry, Yuugi.", Sugoroku had said with a sad sigh. Yuugi was old enough to understand what death meant, and he was heartbroken. Although Kin couldn't talk and never showed a sign he could even understand him, it had never mattered to Yuugi. Kin had been his only friend for more than three years, even before Anzu came into his life(3). He cried. And while he did, he repeatedly asked in his mind the questions, how, why, what for?

Now, years later, after he had given the final attach and fell on his knees, crying, he again found himself repeating these questions in his mind, how, why, what for?
