Red Nail Polish

Violet Turner never thought she would be doing what she was doing right now. She never, ever, in a million years thought Charlotte would be sitting on the couch with her and painting her toenails. It was bizarre and comfortable at the same time. She knew she should hate the tiny blonde woman, but they were having fun and connecting somehow.

As watched Charlotte paint her little toe with red nail polish, she almost laughed out loud seeing the woman painting with such precision and concentration. Charlotte placed the brush back in the nail polish bottle when she had finished both feet. Both doctors took a moment to admire Charlotte's handiwork.

"Thanks," Violet said as she wiggled her toes.

Charlotte smiled sheepishly and shrugged her shoulders. "It's no problem."

Violet smiled back and took a moment to pat her belly affectionately. Somewhere along the way she had fallen in love with the Bug. And now she couldn't wait to see the little guy. She was still nervous, still scared, but things were going to be okay. Or at least that's what she thought.

She looked back up, only to see Charlotte staring at her belly. She was used to the staring. Everyone stared at the pregnant woman, that and they all touched her belly. It's like she had turned into Buddha, only no one was going to get good luck rubbing her.

"Do you want one?" She said to Charlotte.

"Yeah. I do. I've always wanted a little girl with blonde hair like mine. I'm going to have one someday and hopefully it'll be with Cooper." Charlotte leaned in closer to her with a hand perched at her side.

Violet knew what Charlotte wanted to do. "Do you want to…" She gestured to her stomach. "He kicks now."

"It's a boy?" Charlotte asked while placing a hand on her belly.

"I don't know for sure, but it feels like a boy. If he is a boy, Uncle Cooper is going to have to teach him how to do boy stuff. I'm not good with boy stuff. I don't like getting messy or playing games that involve balls and running."

Charlotte let out a snort of laughter and then added, "I'm sure you'll be a great mother."

"Thanks."

And then Charlotte asked in an awkward and clearly uncomfortable tone. "So…does your, uh, son have a father yet?"

"Um, kind of. I'm still working it out. Sheldon is pretty much out of the picture right now and Pete…well I don't really know about Pete."

Charlotte nodded and then added, "Just as long as he doesn't call Cooper Daddy."

Violet rolled her eyes. "I think I got that already."

"And you and Cooper?" Charlotte just had to ask.

"Charlotte you don't have to fear me. He's my best friend. That's it. Really he's like a brother to me."

Charlotte raised a perfectly arched eyebrow.

"Oh, for god's sake! The man helps me tie my shoes."

That did it for Charlotte. She broke out into a fit of uncontrollable laughter.

Violet sat up straight in realization. "You were there that morning weren't you?!"

"I'm here all the time. You just don't notice."

"Oh god, that's so embarrassing."

Charlotte continued to laugh.

"It's not funny," Violet insisted. "I can't even see my feet anymore."

Eventually Charlotte got her laughter under control and she was able to speak again. "I'm sorry about all the drama I started before," Charlotte finally said.

"I'm sorry I called you a skank."

Charlotte scrunched her brow in confusion. "I don't really remember that."

"That's because I never said it to your face, well not directly anyways, but I was thinking it in my head. A lot."

Charlotte rolled her eyes, but otherwise seemed to forgive her. "So are we friends now or what?"

"We're friends."
