A Night of Poker
"Poker. Ha." Joker murmured as she studied the cards in her hand.
"That's Joker with a P." Wicked added, seeing the confused faces of Jack, Mush, and Race. Spot rolled his eyes as the smallest smirk pulled up the corner of his mouth; he'd heard this exchange too many times to count.
Joker gave a small laugh as she put a penny into the pot. She had a crappy hand but she wanted to prolong the inevitable. One of them would draw it; it was only a matter of time. Time in which she could draw out the game, maybe bluff a bit and give Race a run for his money; a thought that made her smile widely.
Racetrack caught that maniacal smile and raised an eyebrow, looking just the slightest bit worried. Winking, she almost laughed out loud as he looked quickly away, pretending to be interested in his hand.
They went around the table, everyone putting in and finally it was the time she'd been waiting for. Obviously no one was dealt it, which means someone would get it soon. She hoped. If not…well, then not only would she be out of a few cents, but so would Wicked and Spot. The signals they had directed at her, the ear rub from her soul mate and the eyebrow scratch from The King over there had been loud and clear.
And then it happened. It made it even better that it was Race."Wait a minute." The Italian said, his cigar hanging delicately out of the corner of his mouth as he picked up the two cards he'd requested from Jack, the dealer and to her left, "What the…" He stopped in mid-sentence as his gaze slowly lifting to meet Joker's from across the table.
She bit her lip, trying to keep in the bubble of laughter, and met his brown eyes innocently.
"She do it again?" Spot asked, his keen blue eyes shifting between the two, knowing full well the answer to his question.
Race's gaze was dark as he nodded slowly and threw the Joker card on top of the money in the middle of the table. Joker couldn't keep it in any longer; her giggles shook her body as she looked around at all the exasperated faces; only half of which were truly exasperated.
"Damnnit, Joke. I had a good hand!" Race exclaimed, taking everyone's cards back and beginning to reshuffle them, his face contorted into a scowl that would scary any normal person.
Joker and Wicked were not ordinary people and so they ignored him as he began the next deal. Wicked leaned over, speaking low enough for only Joker to hear, "Thanks."
Her other half only smiled in response. Racetrack was well aware that the occasional Joker slipped into the deck when they played and yet he continued to invite them. Perhaps he expected it to one day stop…but as long as her name was Joker, it wouldn't. It was, after all, her signature trick.
"That's why ya nevah let her cut the deck." Spot told Jack pointedly, but he sent Joker the smallest wink.
She slipped the Joker card between the black, silk strip that ran around her top hat and beamed at Race as he dealt her his cards, unaware that she had another Joker up her sleeve, poised to be sent in with the next deal.
