Hagrid shuffled across the threshold of his cozy hut – the warmth coming from inside felt so inviting after an hour spent in the pouring rain beyond the Hogwarts grounds. As he shrugged out of his massive coat and rubbed the rainwater from around his beetle-black eyes, a familiar hoot sounded from the space behind him. Hagrid spun around quickly - anticipation and excitement building up inside him.

It was her – she was back.

Sitting by the fire - brandishing her wings in a welcoming gesture – was Hedwig. Her soft white feathers gleamed in the light of the fire, and her dark eyes looked particularly enthralled at the sight of him.

Hagrid breathed her name, "Hedwig," before padding over eagerly to sit by her side against the warmth of the brilliant golden blaze. Hedwig greeted him by brushing her soft head against his arm, before staring up at his worn face with mild concern. She hooted anxiously but Hagrid shook his head with a weak grin.

"I'm fine, love. Jus' bin workin' hard recently. An' its bin' tough, with you gone an' all," Hagrid murmured, hoping to put the worried bird's mind at ease.

He gazed sideways at her, "I've missed you."

Hedwig stared back at him with a mixture of guilt and affection.

"Hoot"

"S'ok," Hagrid said in a gentle tone, wrapping his large hand around her to pull her close against him, "Yer back now."

Hedwig cuddled against him contentedly. She hoped that her tight embraced would let her say all the things she hadn't been able to say in the past few weeks that they had been parted; all the nights she had gazed at the black night sky and dreamt of his loving eyes; every cold morning where she had longed for the warmth of his touch. But that was behind her now – they were together again, at long last.

And she wasn't about to leave again anytime soon.
