"Can I ask you a question?"
Maya was dressed in a long black evening dress. There was an empty space next to her on the sofa - Phoenix had left to get drinks. Edgeworth sat in the chair to her right, looking his usual dapper self and staring longingly into his empty glass. Franziska and Adrian were sitting on the sofa across from her, looking equally gorgeous.
They had just returned from a wonderful dinner at a fancy restaurant and had decided to stop in at Edgeworth's for a nightcap to prolong the experience. This was the first time they had all been in the same place in almost nine years.
Franziska looked up from the teacup in her hand and peered at her. "You just did."
"Oh." She blinked. "Well, can I ask you another question? After this one?"
Adrian chuckled. Franziska couldn't help but smile a bit herself. "Fine," she said, raising her teacup to her lips.
Maya uncrossed her legs and leaned forward, elbows on her knees and hands together.
"When do lesbians know they've had sex?"
Franziska choked and coughed, spitting tea all over the coffee table between them. Adrian's mouth fell open and hung there. Edgeworth's eyes shot open and his eyebrows flew to the top of his head. Maya just stared at the lot of them.
"What? I was just curious."
"What kind of foolish question is that?!" Franziska managed to choke out in between coughs. Adrian was simply going "uh, um, well," over and over again.
"I was just wondering is all."
The youngest Judge in Germany went for her whip instinctively, but found it wasn't there - Adrian had made her leave it at the hotel.
Edgeworth noticed. "Down, Franziska," he said, his tone lightly diplomatic. He was having a hard time concealing his amusement.
Franziska scowled and batted away the napkin Adrian was using to clean the tea off her dress. "Only because I don't want to stain your carpet red, little brother."
Maya was incredulous at the reaction her question had incited. "Jeez," she said as she leaned back in the sofa and crossed her arms, "you try to ask a simple question and people get all upset for no reason."
Phoenix entered the room, holding a platter with a number of drinks on it. "What'd I miss?" He asked idly, before he noticed the state of the others.
Franziska was cursing a blue streak in German and Adrian was holding her back and trying to talk her down. Maya was still seated at the sofa, looking quite bemused.
Edgeworth started laughing, his hand moving to cover his eyes. "Just an awkward moment, Wright."
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Shoot."
They were home, at their apartment. Maya had changed out of her formal attire into something a little more comfortable, and was laying on the couch watching TV. Phoenix too had gotten out of his suit - all he had on now was his shirt and pants. He was in the kitchen getting a glass of water.
"When I was out of the room getting the drinks, what happened in there?"
Maya sighed and sat up, her long black hair spilling haphazardly around her shoulders. "I don't even know, really."
"Well, tell me what you do know," Phoenix said, walking back into the living room. "I'm curious."
She put her feet up on the coffee table and slowly slid low into the sofa until she was almost horizontal again. "All I did was ask a question."
"What question?" He asked, raising the glass of water to his lips.
"I just asked Franziska when lesbians know they've having sex."
Phoenix froze for a moment in mid sip, then choked and spit his water all over the coffee table. Maya pulled her legs up and brushed them off as he coughed and hacked, trying to get the water out of his lungs and throat.
"Yeah, that's what she said," Maya pouted. "And I still haven't gotten an answer to my question."
