Chapter 1 - An Uncertain Future

Today's weather had been a little warmer outside with mostly sunny skies. This was a welcome change from the stormy weather that had plagued the town all week. The fall breeze moved through the air, blowing the fallen leaves along the ground at Andrew's feet as he walked home through the park from the local coffee shop. He liked going there after work to unwind while drinking coffee and read a book. The fall was one of his favorite times of the year because of the leaves changing color. The wind started up a little bit causing him to shiver a bit. Andrew zipped up his sweatshirt, which covered his long-sleeved button shirt, as he felt the wind's chilling effect through his clothes. He hoped that it wouldn't be this cold when he visits his sister next month.

Andrew didn't think that being a sales and technical support associate for a computer company was the worst job in the world. It sure beat working in the fast food industry, he thought. There have been times that he has wanted to bang his head through the wall at the idiocy of some customers. It wasn't easy at first but he slowly learned to turn negative situations into positive ones. Besides, the last thing he needed was his boss to hear about how he had told a customer what he really thought about them. The only real joy that Andrew got out of it was knowing that he was able to help someone out. It made him feel like he at least accomplished something.

After a quick stop at the local market to get some groceries for dinner, Andrew finally made it back to his apartment building. Walking up to his door, he thought that he could hear a very faint humming sound. Turning his head to look down the hallway, he couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. It was probably coming from one of the other apartments, he thought to himself. Andrew shrugged his shoulders and unlocked the door.

It was dark and quiet inside the apartment, except for that same humming noise that he heard from outside but now it was a little bit louder. Closing the door behind him, Andrew turned on the kitchen light on and placed the grocery bags on the counter as quietly as he could in case it was an intruder. He grabbed a knife from the knife block on the nearby counter. Holding it in his shaking hand, he slowly walked down the hallway to find the mysterious light. With each step that he took, the humming noise got a little louder.

He checked each room but didn't find anything until he saw a dim light coming from behind the bedroom door. Placing his sweating hand on the door, he slowly pushed it open and saw a small white shining sphere, no bigger than his hand. This is where the light and humming sound was coming from. On closer look, it wasn't white but a mixture of all colors. They were swirling and changing with each beat of his heart, which was beating pretty fast night now. "What the hell is that thing," he asked himself as he moved a little closer to get better look. This was something that he had never seen before.

All of a sudden, the humming sound got louder and the orb started to pulsate almost like something was trying to escape from inside of it. Andrew started to back away not knowing what was going to happen next. Before he could reach the doorway, there was a bright blinding flash of light that emanated from the center of the orb, followed by a pulse of energy. He felt it hit his body as it knocked him to the floor, causing him to drop the knife. Momentarily blinded and dazed, Andrew shook his head to get his bearings. He rubbed his eyes until his vision returned. After re-adjusting his glasses, Andrew turned his head back towards the sphere but saw that it had changed.

The sphere now had a purple glow around it with rainbow colors swirling inside of it. It was also now bigger than his head and it was slowly getting larger. The air around the sphere started to crackle as if it was giving off a lot of energy. He could feel a pulsating energy coming from it hitting him. Suddenly, the bright colors in the center of the circle started to swirl around faster.

Like in a trance, Andrew stood up and walked towards it again. It was like something inside there was calling to him but he couldn't tell what it was. He reached out with both of his hands until they touched the sphere, trying to hold it in his fingers. A strange sensation went through his body. He felt a strange warmth spreading from every part of him. Somewhere in the back of his mind, a voice was telling him to get away from it but he either couldn't hear it or he just ignored it. Something about this was drawing him in like a warm blanket or a hug. It as now as big as he was and he felt his hands disappearing inside of it.

Andrew snapped out the serene feeling as he felt being pulled inside. "What the hell?" he cried. "What's happening? I can't move my hands. Let go of me you piece of crap." It was like something on the other side was pulling him in and he couldn't stop it. All of his attempts to free his hands failed. He's seen too many movies to know this can't be good. Instead of pulling away from the sphere, he kept being pulled closer to it.

Both of his arms were now sucked inside. Fear overtook him as he felt the heat and energy from the sphere got closer to his face. He looked away and screamed but his pleas for help were not answered. Tears formed in his eyes as he struggled to free his arms. It felt like they were being ripped out of their sockets but he was finally able to get one free. Waving his hand around, he frantically tried to grab onto something with his sweating hand, anything. But it useless as the rest of his body except for his arm and head were gone. "NOOOOOOOO!" He shouted just before the rest of him was enveloped inside the orb. The strain was too much for him and he passed out.

Once he was completely inside, the orb pulsated again and disappeared in a flash of light. The room was dark again. All was quiet in the house as if nothing had happened.

On a hill, a little ways away from the Golden Oak Library in Ponyville, the pony Twilight Sparkle sat with her telescope pointed at the sky. She was studying the constellations and made notes of their positions as she looked through her telescope. Sitting round her were some snacks, a stack of parchment, and books. She wished that her friends were as interested in astronomy as she was. But like with a lot of things that she liked to do, she did them on her own. If only I could have somepony that could share my interests, she said to herself.

"This is so exciting! I hope that I get to see some shooting stars tonight." Twilight said gleefully.

As if the heavens were answering her call, a bright shooting star raced across the night sky making her gasp. Soon another one appeared as well but this one was a lot bigger. But what got her attention, other than its size, was that it was starting to fall towards the ground nearby. It shot over her head and she turned around to see where it was going to land. It got closer and closer to the ground until it impacted in a field not far from where she was. Throwing caution to the wind, she decided to check it out and started galloping as fast as she could. She had never seen anything like this before. She was both scared and excited.

As she got closer, she slowly trotted up to whatever it was that crashed into the ground. The brightness from the ball of light caused her to cover her eyes with her hoof. Moments passed by as it slowly lost it's brightness. Twilight lowered her hoof, blinking her eyes a few times and squinting to get a better look at whatever it was. The small form splayed across the ground looked very strange to her.

"It's some kind of creature!" Twilight gasped bringing her hoof to her mouth, not believing what she was seeing. It didn't look like anything she's ever read about before in any of her books. And she a lot of them full of pictures of creatures from all over Equestria but nothing like this. "This is an amazing discovery!"

Whatever it was, it had hairless skin on its face and neck except for the messy hair on top of its head. From what she could see, it had four limbs. Two of them had five weird looking digits on the end of them, almost like claws but stubby. Its body was covered in some sort of clothing that she didn't recognize. On the front of its peaceful looking face was a pair of glasses.

"Is it alive?" She asked quizzically to no one but herself, tilting her head to the side, bringing her hoof to her chin.

As if the creature could hear her, its eye's opened slowly. A pair of blue eyes seemed to stare right at her violet-colored ones. It groaned...then it spoke.

"He..lp...m..me.."

Twilight gasped loudly, staring at the creature. "You..you can talk." She look at it in shock. The eyelids closed a few moments later and the creature ceased moving.

Twilight noticed that its chest rose and fell gradually with the motion of steady, if faint, breathing. "Well, I can't leave it out here or it will die. Oh, I wish Fluttershy were here. She'd know what to do. I'll have to contact her in the morning." Her horn glowed as she lifted her discovery into the air back to the library. She'll come back for her other things later, she decided. Oh, and send a letter to Princess Celestia.
