Sometimes you just get really annoyed at pairings. I mean, pairings are fine but like stories just full of pairing up and romantic mush? A few I can stand, but yeah…this is the story that came out of my frustration of finding how many ExA stories there were and how few stories I could stand with no pairings.
If it wasn't just happening to them at that moment, Eragon would've laughed at the irony.
She stared at him, her emerald eyes piercing through him, into his mind, into his soul. Searching for a reaction.
She had spoken in the Ancient Language.
She could have not possibly lied.
So it was just the truth.
He knew. He could see the well hidden emotion that was just peeking through.
His eyes he carefully was aware of. If he wasn't holding his face in an ice cold grip, he knew his shock and confusion would've been evident.
It was already many years ago that he said those words.
Decades, centuries ago perhaps.
When he was younger, he loved, no maybe adored, maybe cherished or some odd combination of all three, towards her. He would've done many things for her without any thoughts towards the consequences. He would've loved her with no second thoughts.
Now he had responsibilities. She did too.
Like his students, the eggs and his fellow riders, everyone he knew. She had her subjects and her people to rule over.
It would never work.
His first private meeting with her in what 200 years? He wasn't sure, but his first private meeting with her in a long, long time and he would be the one who had to ruin it.
He hated himself for it, but it was the right thing to do.
The words came out like water from a jug, spilling and damaging the delicate paper before it.
He couldn't face her.
He turned his face so he couldn't see her eyes.
He didn't want to see the consequences of his actions.
He tuned out Saphira and her passionate reunion with her mate, making sure she couldn't feel or think anything from him.
Maybe Arya's dragon's feelings were affecting her too.
In a twisted sort of way, just as he wished many years ago, Arya would love him back.
But he had to say no, because of responsibilities, one of the many reasons she gave to him in refusal.
Right then, at that very moment, he really hate Fate.
Hopefully one day Arya would forgive him for doing what he knew had to be done.
Authors note: I like ExA, I do, just sometimes….
