It's cold, so cold that she can feel it in her bones. Only water surrounds them both and the silence of the night becomes almost unbearable. She just keeps moving her legs, pushing herself forward, hoping that land would be close enough.
"I can't do this anymore" Paul says, stopping. He's ready to give up, to let himself die. But Jane won't let him. She stops swimming, and looks him in the eyes, just as she had done in the bridge.
"Hey, think about Danielle, ok? You need to this for her, she deserves justice. If we die nobody is going to investigate the case anymore, and we won't find the truth." It was a lie, she knows that; of course the team would keep investigating this, but Jane needs to make sure he won't give up.
"Ok, just because of her" Paul says as he starts to swim again. They don't have much time in their hands, if they don't keep moving, they would die.
Jane starts to swim again, her legs aching from the effort. Everything seems so distant, expect one thing; Maura. It is as if she was right there with her, she can feel her. In Jane's mind, her own words replay as she keeps moving "You need to do this because of her" and that image burned in her closed eyes; that radiant smile and those beautiful hazel eyes that show a shy love.
If she wasn't in the water she would be able to distinguish the salty water of her tears form the one of the sea. The thought of not being able to spend one more minute with Maura breaks her, but it also gives her the strength to not give up. She couldn't die without saying goodbye to the person she loved most.
Jane head comes out of the water to take air. "Don't give up" she hears. Desperate she looks to see where it had come, but no one is there, nothing is near, only Paul and sea. Jane hears it once again "Don't give up", but this time she knows where this comes from. It is Maura's voice; those were the words that kept Jane grounded after she had shot herself in the abdomen.
She can't move now, shocked to hear those words again in her mind. Jane wants to keep swimming, but her body doesn't move. Suddenly, she sees one light coming her way. "Paul, wait" she yelles loud enough for him to hear her under the water. "I think a boat is coming this way."
The light seems nearer, brighter. She starts to wave her arms above her head, and he copys her. "Help, help" they shout so loud their throats become soar. The people from the boat see them, and stop.
Jane uses the only strength she has left in her to swim over the place where the boat is.
"Take my hand ma'am "says one of the men that were aboard it, extending his hand to Jane. She takes it, and he lifts her inside the small embarkation.
She is wrapped in some towels and jackets sitting in a small bench. "Hey" she hears. Paul sits next to her, also wrapped in thousands of clothing layers.
"Thanks for all that you did, detective." He says with emotion in his voice.
"Anytime, I know that you didn't do it"
"Can I ask you something?" Jane just nods as a response. "How did you see this boat? I couldn't see it under the water."
"I wasn't swimming." She says as she rubbed her scared hands that ache from the cold water "I heard something and I stopped to see"
"You heard the boat?"
"No, I heard a voice." Jane goes silence, thinking about how hearing Maura's voice had saved them. "Her voice" she whispers, forgetting that Paul was listening.
"And who is she?" he asks "Is she what kept you going?"
"Yes." Jane replay sincerely "Maura is the person I love the most."
