A/N:I was going through angsty stories and I came to the conclusion that there's no sad Norrington/Elizabeth stories. So here you go. It's mostly derived from a scene from AWE.
Disclaimer:I don't own Pirates. As you could probably figure out yourself.

His love for her had never really been appreciated. There had been that one time..where he had been close to wedding her. One time..where she had been his prospective wife. One time, where he could have imagined them being together.
But life was always against him, and though he got the job, the stability, everything an English woman could want, he could not win over Miss Swann. A lowly blacksmith did that before him. And then a pirate did. How utterly pathetic. Worthless scum could entice her before himself.
So you must know, how after all the failed attempts, it must have gone to his head. Maybe all the pain and rejection took its toll.

That night he caught her. Sneaking off the ship with the filth she called her crew. She looked beautiful, even when draped in men's clothes and her hair tangled beyond belief. Her dark eyes constantly flashing in the moonlight that seemed to follow her moves.
And he knew, that even now, she was running to someone else. It was never him. Happiness just didn't seem like it was meant for him.
He came upon her quickly, and tried his best to talk her out of leaving. He still couldn't let go. Heavens, would he ever?
But the girl would not take orders anymore. Now she made them.
Deep in his heart he knew that she would never love him the way he loved her. And now, his destiny seemed clear to him.
He could show her that he had not forgotten his love for her. There was no one here to distract her. No William. No Sparrow.
It was just him and her, standing together in the night with the sky lit up by the moon, and the ship rocking unsteadily beneath them.
Norrington could finally do one thing to show her how much he still cared. Even throughout her father's death, and his rejection, and her uncertainty.
Yet even as he thought of kissing her, he heard a guard coming.
As usual, life was against him. What timing.
The guard was coming closer to where they stood, on the deck of the captive ship. And he had to let her go. Now.
So right then and there he decided he would. With a kiss. Something he had kept to himself for far too long. He looked down at her..knowing that he had finally made some connection.
Urgency was of the essence though, and she had to go. He could have a chance to be her hero though.
She climbed onto the rope attached to the other boat and James Norrington looked back at her. There was sorrow in his eyes, as well as resolve. He knew he had done right.
The guard arrived at the scene and saw the traitor, plunging a sharpened wooden stick straight through him. Norrington gasped as the pain engulfed his body, and fell backwards.
Elizabeth looked back in time to see him fall.
"JAMES!!," her cry of anguish echoed through the dark.
These were the last words to echo through his world.
Along with the thought, "I had done right."

FIN.
