In preparation for HTTYD 3, this thought came to my mind at three in the morning. Not the most ideal time for a story, but oh well. Here we are. I have returned with another one of those sad one-shots. Prompt this time is: Toothless does indeed leave Hiccup.
Enjoy!
I did this
That was the thought coursing through Hiccup's head as he watched Toothless fly away for the final time. He couldn't help but release a shuddering sigh as he realised he would never see his friend again.
Toothless? I could've sworn you had…teeth
Hiccup continued to watch the small dot of his dragon until there was nothing left, and kept staring, wondering if there was something, anything, he could have done differently.
Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile
Hiccup bit back tears, recalling his father's word about how a 'Chief doesn't show weakness, Son!'. Briefly, he wondered if Toothless was feeling the same pain.
I wouldn't kill him, because he looked as frightened as I was. I looked at him, and I saw myself
They had been the same. Brothers. Similar in ways the others would never understand. Because they still had their dragons.
Well, good morning, Mr. Bossy
Hiccup thought back to all the times he would ignore Toothless's insistent pounding on his roof for a flight, wishing now that he could take back the time and go. But it was pointless.
Buddy, thank you. You are amazing
Toothless really was amazing. By far the fastest, the smartest, and the cutest. Able to mimic human expressions very accurately. Why Grimmel decided to hunt these magnificent creatures, Hiccup would never know.
Well, Toothless, this is it. You're finally going to see that you're not alone.
Toothless may not be alone any longer, but now Hiccup was. Toothless was his best friend. Sure, he had a family, and an entire village, that loved and supported him, but it still hurt.
You save me, I save you! That's the way it is!
That was more or less their motto over the years. From the time of the Red Death, to the battles with Alvin and Dagur, Viggo and Johann, Drago and Grimmel. The enemies changed, but the simple fact of Hiccup and Toothless looking out for one another never did.
It wasn't your fault, Bud. You'd never hurt him. You'd never hurt me. Please, you are my best friend, Bud. My Best Friend
Stoick had a saying, one that Hiccup heard a lot. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. And, Hiccup supposed, Toothless was following that. He was protecting his entire race by going off with the Light Fury. It was for the greater good.
We can do this. You and me. As one.
So then why did it hurt so much?
TOOTHLESS, IT'S NOW OR NEVER!
Hiccup turned from the cliff and slowly started to walk back to Berk. It had been a long day, and it was going to be an even longer week. But, if he strained his ears, he could just barely hear the roar of his best friend.
You never cease to amaze me, Bud. Thank you
For the life of me, I can't seem to write one-shots like these over 1,000 words. I don't know why.
Anyway, I'll let you guys know of anymore gut wrenching stories if I think of any. I seem to be on a sad story streak lately. What else is new?
Thanks for reading!
