A large banner hung above Sheldon's head with the words "Happy birthday, Amy!" printed neatly in the center. He held an untouched glass of wine in his hand and supported a goofy grin on his face; proud of a job well done.
The best touch had to have been the music- the best Neil Diamond CD ever to have existed. This played quietly in the background, muffled by the sound of light chatter about the room.
Everything was perfect indeed.
And then the door slowly opened to reveal the once lonely girl who wished she had it all. Her hair fell in soft curls onto her shoulders and her new cardigan had her feeling something wonderful.
Amy walked into the scene with confidence, and her gaze fell directly onto Sheldon.
Swiftly he made his way over to her and, after giving her the wine he held, smiled sweetly at her. The rest of the gang had migrated over to the two and within moments began wishing Amy a happy birthday and congratulating Sheldon on how well the party turned out.
Amy's grin matched Sheldon's as she was more or less pulled to the middle of the room where a stack of gifts laid pure and perfect on the coffee table. Adding them up, there was all but one.
While everyone else sat down, feelings of happiness and joy overwhelming, Sheldon stood behind her and proudly hugged her close.
"I know it's a bit much," he told her slowly, "but please, take a seat so you can open the gifts that Penny insisted you have."
Amy looked up at him confusedly.
"But where?"
Sheldon's simple hand gesture, though meant to be discrete, did not fail to surprise her.
"In... your spot?" she whispered in awe.
He nodded; the smile on his face still prevalent.
Amy sat down in a haze, carefully beginning to open her presents one by one. While she loved and cherished them all, the absence of Sheldon's, although not unusual, left her wanting more.
"Thank you all for these lovely gifts..." she said sincerely once she began to think the night was coming to a close. There was a chorus of replies to this, although Sheldon's voice was heard stronger than all the rest.
"Wh-wh-wait, you still have one more gift left."
Amy could see from her boyfriend's darting eyes, he would have been more comfortable giving her such a surprise out in the hallway, but upon standing, he, in turn, leapt up and hastily took her hand.
Amy was speechless as Sheldon leaned in closer- his breath tickling her cheek- and returned his arms to her; giving her the gentlest embrace anyone ever had in her life.
When Sheldon pulled away he kissed the top of her head and sighed contentedly.
"This year for your birthday," he began with enough tenderness to make her heart melt. "My gift to you is to be a better boyfriend."
Amy felt the heat on her face as she breathed in and out heavily.
"...If it's the last thing that I do." he finished with a smile.
