He moved on, like he said he would, like they both knew he had to.
Her name was Sarah, blonde of course. Worked as a secretary at parkers school. She wasn't a rebound girl he had a couple of those, this she knew was different, and so she did what she had to do.
She knew they couldn't work together, so she stayed long enough to know that he had found some-one. She knew that if she left right away he would never forget her, but also knew that if she stayed indefinitely it wouldn't be fair on him, and his relationships would never work as she would be a constant reminder.
So that is why 6 painful months after that fatefully day, 3 months since he had first met Sarah, Dr Temperance Brennan was boarding a flight. There was no-one here to see her off, no-one knew she had gone. They would take a few days to notice, they were his squints not hers and they had shown that quite clearly over the last 6 months. What they didn't realise was that it wasn't just his heart she broke and that she didn't need anyone's help at making her feel guilty, she felt that quite acutely. Well it's not like she didn't deserve it. She knew she did.
When the staff arrived at the Jeffersonian on the Monday morning, they didn't notice any change. They went about their lives as usual. It wasn't until Booth brought in a case on late on the Thursday afternoon did any one realising that there was no forensic anthropologist. Questioning the guards told that she had not been seen since last Friday, when she was caught on CCTV carrying a small box and leaving in her car.
They searched her office, found only a few items missing. Jasper, brainy smuf and a couple of pictures that had sat on her desk, everything else was the same. She had left, run off as per usual. There were mixed emotions around the lab, but very few were actually sad about her leaving, upset annoyed yes, but there were booth's squints now not hers.
Life went on. A month later, they had a visitor. Max came into the lab and found them all on the platform. He sighed and went to tell them not particularly certain they would care either way but well they needed to know.
She had died, somewhere in the jungle. She had just collapsed while trekking to a dig. Cause of death, dehydration, malnutrition, exhaustion. According to the coroner she hadn't been eating properly for about 6 months, working all the hours god sends.
She was to be buried in the jungle, she didn't want to be shipped back. Didn't deserve it in her mind. She left a note, saying goodbye to her father, asking him not to tell the others, stating they had their own lives, and that she shouldn't impose. She said that she knew she was dying. They were her final words.
I deserve this, for breaking the heart of the man I love, but everyone must agree it was for his own good. He found someone to love him in 30, 40 or 50 years time. Even though I'd love him for all eternity, for him it's for the best. I would only have hurt him more in the long run. Look after them Dad, and never know I might see you again some-when. Love you.
He told them, against her wishes, he told them. They ought to know that the seemingly cold fish that was his daughter died because she felt so much, and loved one man so completely that she died in order to let him have the life he deserved.
He was never seen in the Jeffersonian again, but to the others life went on. They moved on and didn't look back, except one.
Many years later they met up again, the true soul-mates. Hopefully it would turn out better in death than it did in life.
