"The mother of all Nietzscheans," Harper said thoughtfully after Beka, Rhade and Dylan had left the room. "So that would have made Tyr a real motherfu..."
"Harper!" Trance interrupted sharply.
Harper grinned, unrepentant, and left command deck. Trance figured it was probably to go pester Rhade about past flirtations with the woman who was his ancestress. She only hoped Rhade didn't end up killing the engineer. She wasn't sure how much further Rhade could be pushed before he would snap.
"Doyle, is Beka still onboard the Andromeda?" Trance asked.
Doyle cocked her head slightly and looked upward, her lips pursed. "She is now on the Maru, but shows no signs of taking off in the next few minutes."
"Thank you," Trance said as she left.
Trance still couldn't remember everything, but snatches came to her now and then. One of the things she had recently remembered was that she was the one Beka would talk to when she wouldn't talk to anybody else.
She found Beka sitting in the pilot's seat with her feet up on the co-pilot chair.
"Trance," she greeted quietly.
The Sun Avatar sat in one of the seat's further back in the cockpit and waited for Beka to be ready to talk.
"I never really thought I'd have kids. And now I'm the mother of an entire race."
Trance nodded carefully.
"You know, Tyr once called me 'powerful woman'. It's a greeting reserved for higher ranking Nietzschean females. Do you think he somehow knew?"
"I don't know. I don't really remember Tyr that well."
After a few silent minutes, Beka said, "There is one thing I don't understand about what happened. When Dylan was beating Peter... Drago, to death, it wasn't just Rhade that disappeared, it was all of us. Even the Andromeda and the Maru."
Trance thought about it for only a few seconds. "If you had not been the female progenitor, the Nietzschean race would never have existed, and the Nietzscheans would never have overthrown Dylan's Commonwealth."
"And Tarn Vedra wouldn't have... well, whatever happened to it, and Dylan would have lived out his life nearly 300 years before any of us were born," Beka finished for her. "And that would have meant none of us would be here in the Seefran System."
"Exactly," Trance said.
Beka looked down at her hands and then looked up and smiled at Trance. "There's a bright side in this for you."
"What's that?"
"We know it's not your fault that we're here."
"Beka, it's not yours either."
"I know. It's Drago Museveni's. Well, him and my rotten taste in men."
Both women laughed.
The End.
