I own nothing, except my OC.

"Well now," Dolores nearly jolted out of her own skin at the sudden sound of the voice behind her. She sighed seeing it was only Sodapop. "What do we have here?"

"Sodapop Curtis you scared me half to death!" Dolores lowered her hand that had found its way to her pounding heart. She scowled at him.

"I didn't mean to." He chuckled. By the length of his grin she could tell that what he said wasn't apologetic. Sodapop then took notice of Dolores, something had changed about her recently. "Now… what happened to your hair?"

"You like it?" Dolores' frown disappeared in an instant. She began to run vapid fingers through her hair and smiled bashfully. "My aunt did it for me yesterday in her salon."

"I think you look wonderful. Prettiest girl I've ever seen!" Dolores looked down sheepishly.

"You're just saying that, aren't you?" She attempted to conceal the white, square teeth she was flashing behind her hand.

"No I aint and you should know it. Come here you!" Sodapop went to hug her but the moment he stepped forward she stepped back. Before he could even ask why she did this Dolores gave Soda a pointed look.

"It's still a little light out Soda." She warned him.

"No one's around and I've been waiting all day to be with you." He countered.

"And you will Soda, just wait another hour or so." Now it was Soda's turn to scowl. "What's wrong?"

"I'm getting sick of having to be sneaky with you." He grumbled.

"Soda you know why we can't be seen."

"I know, but I still don't like always having to be so careful and I don't like not being able to tell anyone about us, especially my brothers. I don't like lying to them."

"Well, it's the way things have to be for now."

"Do you think you and me can ever be out in public together?"

"Maybe. You heard about all the things happening in the capital nowadays? All the boycotting go on? All this talking about civil rights? Maybe one day I can walk down a street with you in broad daylight. And you can tell your brothers and whoever else you like about us."

"I hope it's someday soon."

"Me too." She smiled gently. Soda looked down at his wristwatch.

"So, in an hour from now, I hope you don't mind if I give you a big ol' kiss,"

"I'd be mad at you if you didn't Sodapop Curtis."
