Author's Note: What follows is definitely new territory for me: breaking into the Supernatural fandom AND publishing a poetry piece AND publishing slash. Originally, I was going to write a Sam/Castiel (Samstiel?) one-shot romance with the title 'Would You Have Loved Me Better If You Didn't Have Wings' but upon typing the title, the verse just weirdly started flowing. (Between you and me, I think it was Cas's doing.) So here it is and I hope that you enjoy and please review!

Would you have loved me better

If you did not have wings

And time and tide would just wait

Once, for one man.

:

We might have sought out some shelter

In a reckless storm

Does the rain make it worth it

The shape of what we've made.

:

Through the sickness of our affection, purged

And turned our hearts to stone

The lies like a veil for truth

Begging for distance.

:

I would have pledged myself to your mercy

And let you see inside

Cut out the tongue that blasphemed

Righted all wrongs.

:

I see you beset by such mortal undoings

With all my propensity reflected in your eye

With light in your wake, the darkness mine

Some bitter grace.

:

You might have known what remains unbroken

Of which you laid claim

For absolution, I had prayed devotedly

Your kiss, the cure for fire.

:

Counted all stars and caressed your name

Yet rejected your divine touch

For love like a secret gate to ecstasy

That I would not survive.

:

Death and destiny in constant war with us

Surrender to either is unjust

And to wait for one man

The time and tide is torn.

:

Be still, my one and lonely guard

Please forgive me of this sin

To dream that you would have loved me best

If only you did not have wings.
