Serenity After All

Hello, and welcome back/to another story. A lot of people have probably already done this concept, but I am relatively new to this fandom and I started to write this just as soon as I finished the BDM. I cried… a lot and I don't normally cry, so I'm writing this to kind of help cheer me up. It's a sad fact that the show was cancelled, so this is going to be basically what I think that the episodes that follow would have been. I have no idea how long this is going to be but hopefully enough for at least a couple of episodes. I'm going to structure the "Table of Contents" by first putting the episode title and then putting Chapters 1, 2, etc. until I reach the next episode when I start all over again. Alright anyway, the main reason I wrote this is because of Wash (and Book but mostly Wash). He's my favorite character and played by my favorite actor (Steve the Pirate, anyone?) so seeing him die physically hurt. People keep telling me to move on, but I am staying right here! That's why there's going to be a lot of Wash/Zoe. Too make up for it. So, yes, I'm writing this so you guys will hopefully enjoy it and it will hopefully not take away the joy I got from realizing that Alan Tudyk was in this new show I was just about to watch.

One: The Beach Task

Kaylee had never been to an actual beach. She stood at the window of their beloved ship, pressing her fingers against the glass in pure fascination. It was beautiful, almost as beautiful as the engine she spent several hours a day staring at.

"Kaylee? I don't know about that window, but did you want to join us?" Mal's voice cut through her daydream of splashing through the waters, startling her back to reality.

"Sorry, Cap'n, but it's just so pretty!" she gushed, rushing over to stand beside the rest of the crew.

"What are we here to again?" Jayne asked, slowly fingering the gun tucked safely in his holster.

Their captain shrugged. "The guy ain't telling me a thing until we get here. That's what he said at least."

"And you don't find that the least bit suspicious, sir?" Zoe inquired, folding her arms across her chest with a frown.

"I haven't said we would take the job yet," Mal admitted, "I still want to check this guy out."

"Captain, permission to wander around the beach?" Wash asked with a huge grin, slipping his hand into Zoe's.

"As long as you're close enough to fly us the heck out of here if things go wrong." Mal directed his attention to Jayne. "Coming with me to pay this client a visit?"

Jayne suddenly looked nervous fiddling with the hem of his shirt. "Ain't gonna leave you, Mal, but this guy's house ain't anywhere near this ocean, is it?"

The others stared at him, a mixture of confusion and/or trying to hold in their laughter displayed on their faces.

"What?" The man looked around uncomfortably. "There was a traumatic experience in my childhood with this plastic gun that shoots water."

"So, that's why you joined the crew? To someday defeat the dreaded children's toy?" Wash quipped, causing both Kaylee and Zoe to try desperately and hide the snickers.

"Part of it, yeah," said Jayne, snarling, "why?"

"Oh, I just wanted to see how many spinning tops you have up your sleeve."

"Okay, okay, everyone shut up," Mal reprimanded, "Jayne, you'll be fine, suck it up. The rest of you, be on guard. Oh, and Kaylee? The fourth gear socket has been making a weird clicking noise. Stay behind and fix it for me."

A small noise of protest erupted from Kaylee's throat at the comment.

"But-but Captain! I was going to go and explore the beach!" she stammered frantically.

"And you will if you get that socket fixed," he reminded her, ruffling her hair as he walked back to his bunk, effectively ending the conversation.

Kaylee sighed, pressing her face into her palms. "Well, I'll be off to look at that socket. Have a nice time at the beach everyone," she said glumly before trudging off to her own bunk.

Sorry, it's short. In the next chapter, you're going to get to see what this guy wants…Also, every time I went to typed Jayne, I almost typed Casey. If you understand that, you have hereby earned my respect.
