Bridge rubbed his hands together nervously, still not used to his new gloves. He'd always worn his dad's old mittens before, but after being accepted to the SPD academy, his family had scrimped together enough money for leather gloves.

He was thrilled to be going, really. Helping people, learning to use the latest technology, maybe even making Ranger one day... and for once, he'd be the same as everyone else. He hoped.

"Is this seat taken?" A very pretty girl in a pink dress smiled at him brightly. She held out a slim hand. When he shook it, she didn't even notice the gloves. "I'm Syd."

"I-I'm Bridge, hi. Just let me move my stuff. My mom kind of over packed for me, along with my dad, and my grandpa." He smiled nervously. "I probably have enough shirts for the entire dorm, oh, and if you're feeling hungry, Mom packed me these little snicker doodles to eat on the ride-"

Syd cut him off. "That means yes, right?"

Bridge nodded quickly, making as much space for his fellow cadet as he could. It was a tight fit, but they managed.

"So, what's you power, Bridge?"

"... I'm sorry?"

She smiled at him again. "I can absorb metal."

Bridge shifted uncomfortably. This never turned out well. "Oh. Well, I... I can read auras, and sometimes I know what's happened in a place before."

"Really? Cool!" Syd pushed back an errant strand of blonde hair. There was no change in how she looked at or spoke to him. "So, what do you think the first day of training's going to be like? This one guy, Sky, has been telling horror stories to the rest of the cadets here, but I don't think they'll make us fight monsters on our first day, do you?"

As she kept chattering, Bridge let himself relax a little. He couldn't speak for the rest of the student body, but Syd was actually talking to him and hadn't minded his babbling (or his hands) at all. Maybe... just maybe, he'd finally found the place he could fit in.
