Chapter 1:

I had always loved the winter and whenever it snowed I would take pleasure in dancing in the falling, glittering snow. Tonight was one of those nights.

I stopped twirling and threw my head back, closing my eyes with my arms spread wide to embrace the feeling of the cold wet kisses on my bare forearms and face.

I opened my eyes to look up into the dark night sky. I sighed at the complaining of my companion.

"Oh Era would you stop complaining! The cold isn't so bad!" I said glaring at the large dragon that took shelter under the evergreen trees.

She lay her head down on the snow covered ground and spread her large leathery wings out.

"I know, I know! Just let me have a few more minutes, I don't normally get to see the snow like this." I said to the beautiful shimmering blue and purple dragon as she made her way out of her hiding place to spread one of her wings above my head, protecting me from the snow.

I sigh and smirk up at her. "Fine! come on!" I say climbing up onto her back with a few nudges from her as help finally lying down in the soft warm spot between where her wings were on her back.

"Era, let's go home." I whispered curling up on her back. she quickly took to flight into the night sky bursting through the cold clouds to the warmer air above where the moon shone brightly making Era's scales shimmer.

It was calm up here as I laid on my back and watched the stars floating above me. I was always jealous of those stars, they knew exactly what they were meant to do and did it well, unlike me.

The only thing I knew about myself was my name because someone had told me. I wasn't even completely sure who, for my first two years I was convinced it was Era and refused to talk to her unless she told me why I was here. This method proved completely pointless because Era never spoke a word, she couldn't of course but when I accepted it we finally began to travel together and now we had a connection that nothing could sever.

That was over two hundred years ago. Asking anyone else anything had proved completely useless over the years, they just passed right through me leaving a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach so I started to avoid other people.

It was only Era and I and we were perfectly happy that way, as long as we had each other that was all we needed.

A sudden burst of frigid air surrounded us causing me to sit up straight and swivel around to prevent my black hair from tangling in my face anymore.

"WOOHOO!" It was the voice of a boy shouting, it carried on the wind around us as it became even colder than it had been on the ground.

I leaned forward slightly, straining to hear the voice again through my chattering teeth.

Era took notice of the sound and began her decent even though we were nowhere near home, we were somewhere in the arctic circle I was sure of that much.

I gripped around Era's neck as she dove through the bitter cold clouds, closing my eyes for fear they would freeze solid. It must have dropped ten degrees in a matter of seconds.

Era finally landed on the cold ground and immediately pulled me off of her back and into the warm embrace of her wings, shielding me from the blistering cold.

I huddled closer to her warm body and felt my eyes shut as darkness took over my sight.
