A Dark Battle for a Good Queen

Emotions swirled within her like one of Zelena's cyclones. Loneliness, despair, relief, anger, fear, exhaustion, helplessness.

She could see the inky black mist, as dark as coal, tickle her fingertips before aggressively wrapping around her forearms, snaking rapidly towards her neck like branches of an enchanted tree. The tendrils forced their way past her nostrils, seeking to consume her from the inside out.

Her body felt like it was suddenly filled to the max, ready to burst. The energy of the dark magic pushed and pressed, trying to rip her apart. She tried to focus, tried to reign in the will to survive, but the power attacking her was overwhelming. A moment later, she felt as if she were a candle being snuffed out; suffocating and smothered.

Regina gasped, paralyzed where she stood, eyes wide and mouth open in a silent scream. Her knees buckled, and she hadn't expected the strong arms supporting her from behind. She collapsed backwards with the rest of her weight and tried with all her might to stop her body from spasming, especially once she recognized who had caught her.

She felt weak and there was nothing she could do. The pressure kept building and she couldn't keep it at bay. There was a deadly, titanic wave on fate's horizon fast-approaching. It threatened to pummel her into oblivion. She looked up at the face staring down at her, desperate to whisper a 'sorry' or 'love you,' but she couldn't get her mouth and voice to cooperate. She was a prisoner to the spell.

Breath stopped coming into her lungs, and before the darkness stole her vision, the only things she could feel was fire on her skin, the cool, single tear sliding from the corner of her eye, and the vice-like grip shatter her pounding heart.

"Mom!" the deep and panicked voice shouted from above her, but her ears never registered the sound.

For the Good Queen Regina, the world had faded into silence.

I don't ever write for OUAT, but I love reading any stories with Regina. I don't know where this came from, or what it's about, it just struck me. No idea if I'm going to add to this, as this wasn't planned as part of a larger story, but who knows? Feel free to suggest any avenues this can take...
