Ryoma had never thought about a future outside of playing professional tennis. In fact, he figured that he would live, breathe, and die by the sport. It was in his blood. And training. But mostly because he was Samurai Junior. Not that he adopted the nickname formally, but he didn't control what the press wrote about him.
So imagine Ryoma's surprise when in his junior high days, he met one Fuji Syuusuke. A tennis player like himself, but didn't live for the sport. There was something new, something thrilling about the older teen. They bonded in a different way than most people would.
Fuji was more outgoing, had friends outside of tennis club, and had more hobbies than just playing tennis. The thought was foreign to him at the time, but Ryoma soon grew fond of the different quirks that belonged to Syuusuke. In fact, he grew fond of the other in multiple ways.
So imagine Ryoma's surprise when the older teen proposed they start dating. As someone who hadn't figured out what to name each emotion he felt, this was a bit of a challenge. One that he decided to take on anyway. Because if there's one true thing about Echizen Ryoma, it's that he never backs away from a challenge.
Fuji never pushed him beyond what he was capable of giving. When Ryoma finally started to figure out each emotion, Syuusuke delightfully accepted each one and returned it with appreciation. He never imagined feeling so deeply and openly for another person in his life. In fact, Ryoma had never thought about being permanently attached to a person for any significant period of time.
So imagine Ryoma's surprise when he decides that he wants to attach himself to someone permanently. Forever. To the end of their days. Despite his difficulties realizing his feelings. Despite Fuji's many, many quirks. Despite what many might see as incompatibility.
Fuji accepted him for who he was. Cared for him tenderly. Never left his side. And most importantly, didn't seem to mind at all that he came second to tennis. Because Syuusuke understood that part of loving and being with Ryoma was accepting his flaws and his quirks too.
So imagine Ryoma's surprise when Fuji Syuusuke proposes to him seven years after they first got together, he doesn't hesitate to say yes.
