Once in Every Moon
Chapter One
"Mommy, will you tell me a story?"
"What kind of a story, sweetie?"
"One of your not real ones!"
"You mean fiction? Well I have a perfect story for you then Emma…"
Emma woke with a start. She hated the kinds of dreams that involved her mom, who died when she was only 8 years old. It made her remember all of the memories she purposely tried to forget. Trying to shake off the depressing thought, she looked at the clock. Damn it, she though, Im gonna be late to school again. Emma quickly grabbed the hair tie off her wrist which left a huge indent since she accidently slept in it. Running quietly through the room she shared with three other girls and tying her hair back at the same time, she opened her dresser and looked at her options. 2 pairs of jeans, 1 long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, and 1 short sleeve. She hated having to go to school with clothes she had worn only a couple days earlier, but it was hard with the meager rations given to foster kids, especially at the age of 16. She slipped on the pants that were too big and the baggy sweatshirt when she heard Ma'am's snarl of a voice.
"EMMA. Get down here right this instant!", said Ma'am with an angry tone she used whenever she spoke to Emma.
"Yes ma'am.", Emma softly said, trying not to wake the younger girls. She grabbed her backpack and skipped two steps at a time down the stairs. As she reached the bottom of the stairs which had walls on either side of the railings, a hand stretched out and grabbed her by the ponytail. Gritting her teeth she reluctantly followed her nasty caregiver to the kitchen. Still holding onto her hair she said, "Where are the lunches I told you to make last night?". "You never told me…" Emma started to murmur before Ma'am's hand striked her across the face. "I said where are the lunches Em-ma?" Ma'am really sucked at trying to hide her anger. "I-I didn't make any lunches ma'am", Emma said looking at her bare feet. Ma'am picked up Emma's chin and said, "you nasty little good for nothing…" without finishing Another hit striked Emma's face since Ma'am's fingernails were so long. "Will you ever make that mistake again Emma?" she said. "No, Ma'am." She quickly answered "You may leave now. Girl." She says with a snarl.
