Vigilant
Vincent knows a lot of things. He knows where the Running Water is; he heard it the first time he was alone in the jungle. He knows the best way to catch a fish is to go into the water, bite one and shake it 'til it's dead, not poke it with a stick like the Big Man and the Little Man were doing. He knows his boy doesn't like it when he strays too far away.
Most of all, Vincent knows there's Something Bad in the jungle. He's smelled its Ugly Smell and heard its Angry Noise, and he doesn't like it one bit.
At night, Vincent lies down close to his boy and puts his nose to his face. The boy twitches but doesn't wake up. In the distance, Vincent can hear the Bad Thing moving. He knows he should be scared, but he isn't. He has his boy to look after now.
In the dark of night, Vincent watches.
