Chapter 1
"Oh, look right on schedule." The person in question was floating above his bed while two pairs of eyes followed him. There expressions showed no concern, as if people floating on the night of their 16 birthday was a normal occurrence.
"Look Gaius," the second pair of eyes whispered, "he takes after his father".
The unspoken 'not like his mother' put a damper on the elderly couples emotions. Gaius and Alice were (to the outside world) a respectable elderly couple, however they both had magical abilities. Magic only appeared when you turned 16, and only at 18 could you become a fully trained witch or wizard. For 2 years the magic was unpredictable and pointing your finger at someone ended in terrible consequences. But now Merlin, their grandson was 16 and ready to enter the world of magic.
Merlin mumbled in his sleep and shifted to the other side.
Alice decided enough was enough, "come on Gaius we don't want to wake the poor boy. He needs a good rest for school tomorrow".
Gaius nodded sadly and followed his wife out the door, pausing once more to gaze at the powerful sleeping boy.
Merlin yawned and blinked bleary eyed at the clock. As his eyes fully opened he felt a blast of enegy seep in him, with a gasp he jumped out of bed- he was going to be late. Combing through his tangled dark hair he sighed. He would never fit in. He hurried down stairs and was met with his grandparents finishing a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle (seriously did these guys ever sleep).
"Wish me luck," Merlin said as he stumbled over to the fridge and gulped down some apple juice, a clear sign of their concentration was the fact that Alice hadn't yelled at him. Merlin couldn't understand by not using a glass he was saving Alice the energy of washing up and saving water that would be wasted. Waving goodbye to his oblivious grandparents he left the house crunching an apple.
They both jerked up as the door closed, Alice gave Gaius a wary gaze, "we didn't tell him".
"Give the boy a break, what can happen in a day?"
"Famous last words," Alice muttered darkly, "do you have a rhombus shaped piece with a grey car?"
The school towered above Merlin making him feel frightened. He would fit in he reassured himself. As he approached his first class (biology) he was targeted by a black haired girl with two indistinguishable girls.
"Hi", Merlin said extending his arm, an epitome of politeness.
The girl scoffed, "who are you?" She crossed her arms in a defensive position( the girls behind her copied her stance).
"I'm Merlin, I'm new". He started at get a bad feeling.
"Well Merlin, keep out of our way," with a flick of her wrist that sent his books flying she stalked of, her disciples following her.
"Do you need any help", a voice asked him.
Merlin looked up and saw a girl and a boy staring down at him with sympathy.
"That would be great".
The girl beamed across her tanned skin, "I'm Gwen by the way, and this is Will."
"Nice to meet you" Merlin said relived that there was nice people at this school.
"Don't listen to Morgana, she's a witch,"
For some reason 'witch' made him feel offended.
"But she is hot," Will explained as if that excused her behaviour.
"Don't listen to him, he's had a massive crush on her forever."
"She's beautiful with dark hair and blue eyes."
"You know you just described the girl version of Merlin. "
"Yeah, cool, are you sure your not related to Morgana."
Merlin groaned, "please don't even laugh about that."
That sat of Will and Gwen into giggles that spread to Merlin and soon they were rolling on the floor.
