Disclaimer: The Odyssey, Calypso, and Odysseus belongs to Homer; I am purely borrowing them...

It was really over. Calypso stood on the shore, surrounded by the sound of crashing waves. Her eyes shone with betrayal as her arms hung limply by her sides. What was the point of her power if she couldn't assert it? Why couldn't he stay?

That was the heart of the matter; Odysseus, the king of Ithaca. While proud, arrogant, even in the presence of a goddess who could give him anything, he refused. He was loyal to his wife and his homeland, and that hurt more than anything.

She would have given him immortality! She would have been his queen, and she would have loved him for eternity. Yet Cronus' son had thwarted her. No matter the grief it brought to her, she had to let him go. She could sense the horrors ahead for him, yet she could not help him. She had done all she could, but it wasn't enough.

She wondered if Odysseus had realized what it had meant to her letting him leave. She wondered if he realized that she loved him enough to allow him freedom. She knew he loved Penelope, and even she could not deny that loyalty. She only wished that the loyalty was to her.

Calypso had lived alone, with only the horizon for company and comfort. What was the point of living forever if there was no one to share it with?

A silver tear tracked down one pale cheek as the sky darkened around her. Standing alone with the water lapping around her ankles, she knew it was for the best. Maybe one day Zeus will reward her for this.
