When the time comes
I have seen so many lives drift away,
Before my weeping eyes
I silently curse myself because I couldn't save them all
I always knew the time would come
When I'd be swept away to be with angels
But I never thought it would be so soon
Out in that volatile place, I wondered how I'd go.
A bullet, a mine or a shell?
I never would have guessed it would have been encased in mud
As I slowly sunk into that foreign, hostile soil
I swear I could have heard a voice
Saying "come young man, come my friend"
My breath caught as it past my lips
I felt as though I was floating
It was then that I learned of what I was to do
This stranger appeared and smiled at me
Saying it was not my time to go
And then he took my hand we vanished.
From that time forward
I have been serving others
Keeping them safe from harm
They may not know it
But they have been blest
For the time came and they received me, their guardian angel
